Hi everyone. It's time to announce the grand opening of the Topaz Text RPG! So, let's begin by giving a little information on the Text RPG:

Q: What is a Text RPG? Why should I play it?
A: A text RPG is a way to play the Pokemon game while allowing room for players to develop their own story, characters and rivals. The exciting part is that you get thrown challenges that aren't just solved by using the correct HM or by using whatever is super effective - the player who roleplays well and devises creative solutions will excel. It also allows for mods to creates exciting events for everyone to participate in, keeping the game fresh and fun. Otherwise, it's just like a game of Pokemon! Using text, you choose your starter, begin your adventure, catch Pokemon, earn badges and do sidequests!

Q: Why is the Topaz Text RPG only until Hollowlog City?
A: In order to get the ball rolling on the TRPG, we decided to complete it until Hollowlog and to add to the Text RPG as it grows. I'm looking at something like weekly updates, adding one more route or city per week and refining already present content by adjusting levels to the right level of challenge and adding to be seen elements such as the Softwind Towers and the Roothaven Labyrinth. We'll also be looking at adding the Team Rocket and Orion Defender teams, which will be player run with some benefits, once enough interest accumulates. Stay tuned for updates!

Q: Who are the RPG Mods? Can I become one?
A: The mod and admin team has decided to first sound out the interest and see how many players play before holding RPG Mod signups. Currently, we feel that our TRPG leader, NyteFyre, and mod team, ImmunityBow, Cyndadile and Reliability, can handle TRPG updates for fewer than 20 people. Once we get that number of regular players, then we'll look at holding signups to keep update times under 24-48 hours.

Q: Are there any cool features unique to the Topaz Text RPG?
A: Aside from our awesome Topaz Pokemon, we have some cool sidequests, especially ones involving the new Wanted! feature. In sidequests throughout the TRPG, as well as special mod updates and events at their discretion, you will have the choice of doing lucrative, but unlawful things. While these can give you a lot of money, TMs and items, some of which you can't get until much later, they will also place a bounty on your heads. Other players can then challenge you to battles on routes (cities and towns are safe) in order to take your bounty. You'll live in nervous suspicion of all the other players... but you'll be stronger since you've taken the greater rewards! What will you choose?

So, sign-ups begin now, just post a signup topic in the Sign-ups Forum (http://www.pokemontopaz.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?72-Sign-ups) declaring your TRPG Trainer name, which starter Pokemon you'll have, its nickname, and the name of your rival(s)! Good luck, have fun, and let's make this an awesome TRPG together!

I've posted mine up, but it said something about a moderator???

I've corrected the Typo's in the Templates, and added some more specifics to make things nice and clean.

It looks like most people are choosing Celsinge to start off. I'm actually somewhat surprised by that considering all the early Fire typage, and thought that Echoise would be a bit more popular. Right now only Immunitybow has chosen Echoise as a starter.

Oh, and you guys should look into the Out of Battle training mechanic that we've added to the game. During a route, you can request to train a pokemon out of battle (you can do this twice per route, but the two sessions have to be on different pokemon). The mod will give you a scenario, and the amount of Exp and happiness gained will be dependent on how well you RP the scenario with your pokemon.

I'd recommend trying it out for sure!

Wait, what? What about the calculator?

NyteFyre
03-01-13, 04:22 AM
We'd still like the Calculator you're working on, it'd be really helpful to have that database that automatically calculates stats, but we are using Cyndadile's Exp Calculator and the basic Damage Calculator IB found/had lying around for now. There's not a lot of people in the game yet, so it'll work for now.

we are using Cyndadile's Exp Calculator

Are we, or are we switching to the IB algorithm?

NyteFyre

I dunno. I thought you were planning on integrating it into your exp calc?

OK good. I may be going out of town this weekend so I'll get to it next week (or this weekend if I end up not going).

Venap is actually the difficult starter. Fire, Flying, Grass, Poison in the first 5 gyms. People always like the fire starter though.

Yeah since the new calculator is just to make things easier, we can just do things the slightly tougher way for now. Changing exp algorithms if necessary isn't going to destroy the game either.

I suppose for just the starter, Venap is the hardest to use. But in the RPG, there are quite a few choices for other Fire Type pokemon to use, so I figured that people would take one of the other starters and just use a different fire type like Grizlare.

Side note, would it be possible to get a TRPG Discussion subforum in there? It would be nice to be able to discuss TRPG related stuff like Dream Teams without cluttering this thread or anywhere else.

Done

I picked venap.
I like a challenge.

Also, I can't post anything to do with the TRPG anywhere.
I can start a thread but can't comment or post anything without a moderator message appearing, you guys might want to fix that.

I think I fixed it.

Cyndadile

Does not appear to be fixed. Although it did catch a bot.

Silver

nope, only half the problem solved, Still can't post in the dream teams thread or edit any of my posts.

Edit: Damn Cyn, you ninja'd me.

To be perfectly honest I think the Text RPG is just jeopardizing the making of the game. we havent seen any progress in a month in the sprites forum, and I dont think too many people are coding. We need to get to work.

In my own TBH, making a game is hard. A lot of us have been at this for years and it's nice to come here to have fun. Things are still getting done. But the sprites forum is dead right now because we are finished all (if not most) of the content there for the demo. It will wake back up when we need it, don't you worry your head about it.

Celsinge is a lion that's on fire. There's literally no downside to getting one.

(Granted I would love to use Ingero or Grizlare as well, but Kelvoyant is best Fire type.)

I hadn't even thought about Topaz in forever until I got an email in my inbox. Though I won't be participating in this, and this will be my first (and last!) post in like 3 years(?) I admire the persistence present in keeping this project alive. Keep at it, chums.

ImmunityBow

Still at it, Piro. Thanks for dropping by! As an addendum to what Reliability said, with which I very much agree, not everyone here is a huge fan of making sprites, or coding, or mapping, or composing. But, from what I've seen, nearly everyone here likes writing and making their own story. So, since this forum and this game is for us, why shouldn't we do what we love together as a community?

And like there was a lot of activity on the game-making front before the TRPG opened?

Topaz isn't going to get done without a programmer anyway and I don't see anybody stepping up for that in the near future.

At least the TRPG is something to attract people - which in turn, could attract a programmer.
