Hey! People like Badara (and possibly ImmunityBow) may have seen me skulking around at Acanthite once in a while. Since this seems the appropriate place to post this, I'd gladly give you guys my WIP HGSS soundfont. Just PM me, and I'll probably respond with a link. I'm on dial-up, so it might take a bit. :P (Also, I'm completely serious, I've actually ripped raw DLS instruments from the game and am slowly converting them all to SF2 and naming and organising them to GM/GS standard. Just saying.)

Here's my music masterlist:

Battle Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c6657ab5bee44 d6288872a601da0f25e869f4)
City/Town Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c6657d51846ac f66f390bf7e866bfb1230ce0")
Dungeon Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c6657ab5bee44 d6288872a601da0f25e869f4) (ignore the v3s in here, they sucked. :P)
Minigame Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c6657461dd413 5574789892595bc19e6628dc)
Route Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c66577f165ca5 ea734268daada8390b259c5f)
Topaz Titles/New Game Themes (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=41a346a282dec9dc00d27174b47c66571f05af66 a159fb450ac99885da44e881)

More will be added as soon as more themes are arranged.

While it's appreciated and would be really cool STT, Irot_Rebod was the only one with experience in MIDIs and their creation, and so I'm not sure how much help the sound font will be now. My impression is that Irot_Rebod used instruments as he felt fit and didn't bother with making sure they were the same as those used by GameFreak.

Thanks for the offer but I don't think we'll quite go to that level of consistency!

STT
03-18-10, 02:02 AM
Okay, that's fine with me, It's not done anyway. My SoundFont editor sucks, as I can't use Vienna because of my blasted sound card. Well, thanks for telling me!

I've already arranged Dynamo Gardens using my SF2. I have a lot of the old MIDI songs on my computer, though for some reason FL Studio won't loop songs that end in the middle of a bar... IDK why. Though I could arrange it again, because I have a million others that sound realistic. :P

Also, I export at the unholy bitrate that Winamp doesn't even know exists: 450kbps. (Winamp detects it as 320. :P)
http://www.mediafire.com/?o2zumjntolw
Like I said, I CAN do it again.

Also, I'm not a very good scratcher like I_R is, so IDK about Orion yet.

Just listened to it. It loops very nicely, but at the beginning the upward slide really grates on the ears. Is there a replacement for that?

STT

It's probably the Violin being an idiot, I'll add something in its place.

EDIT: Dynamo Gardens; Now less eardrum-breaking!

Just let the man make what he wants to make. We're grateful for it.

Legendaries won't be in the demo anyway. I want to focus on stuff we can use right now, not way later in the game's development.

STT, while I really really appreciate your efforts in "authenticizing" Topaz music by using HGSS instruments I'm not all that convinced that it's for the best. Certainly, the Routes that were originally from the canon games work wonderfully, HGSS' instruments are made perfectly for those, and yes I'm willing to consider replacing those, but the Topaz-exclusive music such as the dungeons really lose something in the transition. When Irot_Rebod composed those songs, he had some specific instruments in mind and I don't think the HGSS instruments really convey the mood and melody as well as the original choices.

Sorry! The Routes (I've only listened to 201 and 202 so far) sound pretty good though!

STT
03-24-10, 07:58 PM
That's perfectly fine with me. I have a bunch of other instruments too, not just HGSS ones. (Thank you, clones.soonlabel.com, for your MASSIVE soundfont stockpile.) Why don't you go to the city theme folder and check out Colossus City's theme.

I've redone Mt. Frost using 'real' instruments, and on my local machine it sounds pretty epic.

Oh man you just won my heart over with the first half of Frost Town. I love the sound of the glockenspiel so much. The second half, while still nice, is a little bit on the
O O
O O
O O
side if you get what I mean. The chords punctuate a little too much, and I prefer Irot's smoother legato. The strings are underplayed in yours (though to be fair on his too, but it's not as noticeable due to the legato) and and lose a lot of spotlight which is a shame because they're such as a nice part. I'm very much willing to consider this one, but I do think it needs a bit more work first. Currently Irot's edges it out by a small margin since his first half is pretty nice too. All in all it's an amazing piece and I think it puts a really great mood onto Frost Town.

Roothaven, yours is just about equally good to Irot's, though I feel his has a bit better balance. I wouldn't mind either but I think this one would come down to a vote if it came to that.

STT
03-27-10, 01:57 AM
The verby sound you hear is actually not the glockenspiel. The glockenspiel is the high bell in the background. The Celesta/handbell is what that light sound is.

ImmunityBow
03-27-10, 02:04 AM
Ah. As one who's played the glockenspiel, the Celesta seems to sound exactly the same.

STT
03-27-10, 02:12 AM
FL Studio Reverb effects. They can work wonders. In the main string part, only the background strings still play, the lead is a flute, it sounds a lot smoother.

zeroality
03-29-10, 11:39 PM
Do you need the midi songs? I'm sure I could find them out there somewhere.

STT
03-30-10, 12:40 AM
Yeah, I have many of them, just not "Team Rocket Theme", the rocket encounter and Cianwood.

ImmunityBow
03-30-10, 12:51 AM
Team Rocket Theme and The Rocket Encounter if I recall correctly haven't been published in MIDI form, since they're our most recent pieces (You can try to get Irot_Rebod to send them to you if you can catch him).

I tried looking for Cianwood in my folder and I couldn't find it, so I assume it's a similar situation for this one. Have you tried modifying the HGSS version to reflect Irot_Rebod's version?

zeroality
03-30-10, 04:25 AM
Irot sent me all of his music in mp3 format. Would that help?

ImmunityBow
03-30-10, 08:31 PM
I believe he wants the midi files so that he can see what the notes are. MP3s don't let you do that.

OK, I just contacted Irot and asked him.

Just one thing I'd like to make note of: be careful when using these higher quality sound sets. I like some of your instruments, but the problem is since I was using heavy amounts of MIDI in some songs, the higher quality sounds tend to over-saturate the pieces. This was a problem I encountered when converting to .mp3, but I found a way to keep things pleasing to the ear without making the compositions sound too thick. I'd say you're okay so far, but it's borderline, so just be aware of that. Great job with changing sound sets, I'm glad to see that there is somebody who can continue on with the music in my absence. Take care and good luck!

STT
04-01-10, 10:45 PM
Huge thanks, IR. Yes, I did notice some oversaturation, one big culprit of that being the Grand Piano. Also, I'm rearranging midis myself and one thing I hate about doing so within FL is that removing unneeded bars doesn't physically remove them, it just converts them to whole rests, to actually loop them I have to remove the rests in Anvil Studio and then since FL hates edited MIDIs, I have to remove the silence from the MP3 in Audacity, which is a process I hate doing. Some particular themes I'm rearranging happen to be Veridian City's theme, as well as the full Magma set.

Well, thanks again, hope you return soon!

As for Triple Triad, not bad. A little more upbeat which is good, a little more punctuated which is bad.

STT
04-03-10, 01:53 AM
There's some new stuff in a few folders, and the Minigame Themes folder was created specifically for the Triple Triad theme. :P
Anyway, check out City/Town themes and Minigame Themes. Unknown City is unknown because I have no idea whatsoever of what city it could be used in.

I would really appreciate it if you posted a midi to Claire's theme too so I can look for resemblances.

SilentSentinel
04-12-10, 01:35 AM
Hmm, yeah. That one kinda sounds like a cooler remix of Claires theme.

ImmunityBow
04-12-10, 01:50 AM
Wow, I just listened to Clair's theme and it really is similar. I don't object to canon remixes in the game (for routes and such) but perhaps since the Orion Defenders are such a signature part of Topaz they should have an original theme?

I could see your theme being used for something else, though, it's a great remix.

On another note, could you possibly remix Jirachi's theme from Pokemon Pinball: Ruby and Sapphire or some other Jirachi music? I really don't see our current Legendary Pokemon Battle theme being used for either Jirachi or Kipporok. Typhidna, yes, but not too much else. (Typhidna's cool enough to have its own music :D)

When I click on the town/city link, it takes me to the same files as the battle themes link. Or am I overlooking something?

ImmunityBow
04-16-10, 01:41 AM
Wow, that made me realize that we still do need a few pieces of music, Portwind, Aquapolis, Calypso, Laysan, and possibly Route 212 and Abaddon Swamp.

In any case, I feel that the Unknown theme would do well in Sedcini City, which is a relatively dangerous enough city to warrant the anxious beginning to the upbeat theme and non-comforting chord structure. I think it's the best match we have currently.

Just a few descriptors so you'll have a bit more info on what the cities mentioned need in terms of music:
Portwind: Portwind is kind of like Slateport but should be different. I feel like something quite festive would be good. Should invoke a seaside town.
Calypso: Calypso is a vacationing, style, long beach and cheap drinks-style town. Something with lots of steel drum would probably be appropriate here.
Aquapolis: Aquapolis works similarly to that Dive-City in RSE (Sootopolis I believe). It's also a diving city, but much more technologically dependent. It's not in the middle of a mountain but rathe manmade systems allowing for life to survive (glass-bubble-etc). As such it should be rather calm and possibly somewhat sci-fi-y.
Laysan: From what I've gathered and made up, Laysan Town is in the middle of a mountainous region and is fairly isolated, so it should have a small town feel. Maybe something similar to Pallet Town or Verdanturf stylistically. Laysan Town is very famous for its berry farmers, though I'm not sure if that helps.
Route 212: This route is one of perpetual night, lots of dark Pokemon and ghost Pokemon, and the majority of the Mt. Frost Sanctuary (Secret Room) sidequest will be here (quest for Mirust). It's in the shadow of the Dynamo Gardens, and should probably be very spooky.
Abaddon Swamp: No ideas for this one, really. It's not a spooky swamp, it's one that those living in Hollowlog depend upon for clean river water.

STT
04-16-10, 08:28 PM
@ragingprimeape: Link fixed.
@IB: Route 212 is on its way, Pokemon Mansion remix time. (Old Chateau is too dungeon-y.)

STT
04-17-10, 01:31 PM
Route 212 is up, if anyone wants to tell me the route numbers of the sea routes and those connecting the towns in Kirant, as there are themes for those, too. There's also a redone Route 26 for the land theme of the final route before the Pokemon League.

ImmunityBow
04-17-10, 05:32 PM
Nice remixes. Route 212 fits very well.

Mountainous Foothills is an excellent remix as well, it even has a bit of a Zelda feel to it, and seems different enough from the original. The horn is a very good addition, as well as the snare. I like this one better than the original even! This is probably one of favourites of your works.

Route to Aquapolis sounds a bit too close to the original for my liking. I'm not entirely sure if it suits, considering that the theme is used near Fortree and Aquapolis is a mainly water route.

Route to Pokemon League sounds fitting enough, fanfares seem to be your strong point (probably because they like bold sound and punctuation and you tend to too). I'm a little worried about how it loops though, it seems a little awkward. Good job though.

Route to Sedcini and Laysan sounds nice, but maybe a little too triumphant? I'm also a little worries about how this loops. I'd expect that the Routes it follows would be a little less jubilant. For the foothills it's fine since climbing plus panoramas is pretty majestic (also that one is a bit less so), but on the lower paths maybe something calmer would fit better.

We're also missing Icthyes City and Cetecea Town Themes! Icthyes is where the Rocket Base is hidden, though it's under the guise of a simple fishing town. So it should have a very simple theme, but with possibly some sinister undertones (maybe drop to minor for a few seconds during a few sections of the piece?). Not necessarily though, Celadon didn't have any sinister undertones. Cetecea Town is where the Orion Base is located, and it should be quite serene.

Great work! I'm glad you're with us, STT!

STT
04-17-10, 05:53 PM
It actually doesn't loop end-to-end @ Pokemon League comment.
Aquapolis route theme is for when you land on islands and is actually Unknown Route 1.mid arranged.
Route 212 is Rock Tunnel arranged.
Mountainous foothills is drop-dead obvious.

Eye of Sand coming soon!

man, some of these, i finally got around to listening to them all, just plain blow me away! Espeically Route 212, and Mistvale is awesome, i love the Ancient, if not Japanese feel of it.

ImmunityBow
04-17-10, 08:01 PM
I actually like the original of Mistvale a little better, since V2 gets a little too punctuated towards the middle which doesn't fit that well flavour-wise (Yeah my comments are boring, they're always the same).

By Unknown City, I thought you meant Irot's originally, but now with the fixed link I see what you mean. This one could possibly work for Kalypso City because of the interesting relaxed syncopation going on the entire time.

I don't know, some of those don't quite seem to fit. Lugia and Kuranpu are kind of similar in nature but I don't really think they should have the same music. And Jirachi's theme should stay lighter than Deoxys'

But yes, having different themes suiting groups of legendaries would be nice.

Quinn

Mostly my point...I posted most of these just for ideas, and a "feel". U know? I still believe if deoxys was remixed lighter, it would be great for jirachi. Give it a bit more calm feel. But the others are more just for ideas.

Olivine has been redone, Frost had its Piano switched and what was a flute part has been returned to the strings, Cranewing has been done. Two new battle themes: Trainer and a special Trainer variant for the Defenders, and Triad's piano is less punctuated, most new versions are v3's, save for Cranewing and Olivine. All others are v1's!

Appreciate all the hard work you're putting in STT!

STT
04-30-10, 01:13 AM
If IB reads this, I have something to say:

You know, you could actually get away with using Dynamo's theme in Portwind, because the two have a similar mood to them.

ImmunityBow
04-30-10, 01:37 AM
You're right about Dynamo and Portwind. It fits. Definitely exuberant enough.

Battle! Unknown: What is this based off of? It sounds like a battle with Missingno. or some kind of Rocket Admin, I guess.

Elite Four V2: There are some scratchy noises. Is it my headphones or the song itself? I like Irot's version better, but the gem in your version is from 40-50 seconds, which quite possibly surpasses Irot's, and I'm not a huge fan of 1:02-1:12 for both versions. An arrangement that I'll probably need more contemplating on, but if you could possibly attempt this one again I think you might be onto something.

The other themes you recently mentioned I can't seem to find. Where are they?

STT
04-30-10, 01:54 AM
Both Unknowns are Giratina remixes. :P

Probably your headphones, as my earbuds convey the sound fine. But yeah, I could redo it with a clearer sound.

Look for themes without version numbers (Battles), with version number 2 (Olivine), and version number three (Triad and Frost) in their respective folders. Triad is in the minigame themes folder.

ImmunityBow
04-30-10, 02:00 AM

So, noticed they were up, took a listen:
Triple Triad - Fine, the main difference I see between this one and Irot's is a looser base and higher overall volume. Actually, all of your arrangements have higher volume, but that's not really a problem.
Frost Town - Excellent, a big improvement over the last one, and that one was already one of your best. A very strong contender, this one.
Olivine - This one seems more upbeat because of the undertones. It's also a lot louder. Not bad at all.

Orion Battle - I'm not a fan of the choir/voice/whatever. It sounds too alien. Everything else about it is great though.
Battle! Trainer - It works.

For the arrangements we do end up using, I might have to ask for you to tone down the volume on some of them, because otherwise the player might have to keep switching volumes as he plays.

I was listening to legendary battle again, and I think I found the perfect pokemon it would go good for. The current (and I think, only) would go good with Kuranpu and Unicrown. I was just staring at the legendary sprites during the song, and those 2 just seem good for it.

THIS IS A HUGE ASS POST...just saying that now.

I got some temp internet that lets me listen to the full song, so I'm taking full advantage right now.
I really like the part in the Olivine when it sounds kinda piano like, around mid part (13 sec-end). Makes me happy :D
Just wondering...are we gonna have the intro like the other has? (Daaaaaa Daaaaa Dadadada) It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuxYcUgtkSg) is the little 2 secondish thingy.

Idk why exactly but Frost town reminds me of Ocarina of time/Majora's mask. I like it

Loving Dynamo Gardens :D

Although I like Cianwood, I dont know which one you based it off of. Are you going for the soothing quiet style, like HGSS or the more up beat like GS? If your going for the more slow version, check this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1f9WJd64No) out. A more calm and soothing intro, and the main part (around 28 sec in yours/around 30 sec in that version) If your going for the more upbeat, like GS, listen here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MNAktk9ei8&feature=related) This is the "hit more upbeat. If your going for that theme, add some more to the main body part.
here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nrp4joGGhOY&feature=related) an example of what someone elses remix is like. Someone who listened to that remix said, "
The silent whispers of the wind brush through, the silence of this content town just ease the embrace of fear and worry. The aged houses do not wither without a story, the burnt tower shadows its sad tale of its abandonment, but still sings its beauty by the pure majestic sight of it. ever morning holds grace, and every moon carries rest in the legendary town of Ercuteak. There's a comment I think we would all want.

I like your intro's "intro" but the final part, the "wild" part, I like IR's better. Idk how, but maybe you could make it sound more like his in that area...?

Ironicly, I'm opposite of what I said above with your title screen. Love the main body, but the intro (and some other parts) dont seem to be loud and "based" enough....imo.

Love your Sunken Ship.

Is Mt Frost the same as frost town, with a remix?

Route 201 is GREAT! Love the feel, love everything about it. It might be just me, but I think it is Perfect! GREAT JOB! :D I listened to it over and over.

Route 202, 3, and 4 and 5 are pretty good. That being said, I think 205 should become 202, have 202 become 203 AND 205, have 203 become a really later route (at least 208) ,and have route 204 become a not as later one. (Possibly 207) I'm using the map and the "tilemaps" to look at.

I like the mountainous foothills back stuff but the stuff in the intro I'm not a fan of.

I REALLY like route 212 (except between 32 sec and 47 sec, seems a bit too different) by the way, whats on route 212.

Route to Aquapolis: Land makes me jumpy with excitment. Yet again, I gotta say...it in my eyes gets a PERFECT 10. (I can't wait till I'm surfing and walking this path)

I'm a good fan of the route to the pokemon league and the Route to Sedcini and Laysan.

I'd like to start off by saying that I am very happy to see that STT has continued on with the soundtrack. There are definite benefits to the soundset that is being used, but a major drawback is oversaturation. I know it's been addressed multiple times, and it has gotten better, but it's still a major problem in a couple songs. Below are comments I have with each arrangement STT has done thus far. Hope you find what I have to say helpful.

Battle Themes

Battle! Orion Defenders: This is a nice arrangement. I was planning on using an original track for this piece, but this could work. I'd be careful of the choir sound; its sustain characteristic occasionally mucks up the recording.
Battle! Trainer: Another good arrangement. I'm glad you stuck with my original idea of using this melody for the Trainer Battle. Nice work on instrumentation.
Battle! Unknown: Is this an arrangement? If not, excellent work. Sometimes the synthesizers are a little overwhelming. But I absolutely love the atmosphere.
Elite Four Battle: Good arrangement. As the composer, I'm disappointed in my work here - I've thought about scrapping the piece numerous times. Your instrumentation is good, but oversaturation is an issue here.
Rival Battle: Glad you caught the atmosphere in the first half. Really diggin' the organ! Second half is well done as well. Thank you for your work on this one.
Spotted! Orion Defender: Excellent arrangement. Again, I love that organ. Careful with the choir again. Nice instrumentation, otherwise.

City/Town Themes

Cianwood City: Like your instrumentation. Might want to find an additional suspended cymbal in the beginning to replace the one that is absent from my arrangement. Saxophones are a little hollow sounding, not too big of an issue, though. I think I still prefer the guitar as opposed to the flute at the second section, though.
Colossus City: Based on v3, as I find it superior to v6. This is one of my favorite originals I composed, so I was anticipating on being pretty harsh. I'm glad to say I was surprised at the result thus far. Your instrumentation is impeccable here. Only gripe is a little bit of oversaturation in the second half from the synthesizers. I would adopt your glissando from v6, though.
Cranewing City: A small issue with the horns, the delay is a tad distracting. Otherwise, a good arrangement.
Dynamo Gardens: Similar issue with horns in the beginning. Love the upbeat section. The minor section is good. Huge fan of the ending tutti, except I don't hear the clarinet suspension as clearly as I'd like to. Nice representation of my original intent.
Frost Town: Another one of my favorite originals. Beginning is flawless, thank you. I'm missing a little bit on the crescendo into the repeat. I'm lacking a bit of bass, too. It leaves a little to be desired, in my opinion. Quick fix and this tune will have transitioned into exactly what my vision was. Many kudos.
Mistvale City: Excellent instrumentation. Piano may be a bit too loud. Oriental flavor was kept and I am pleased.
Olivine City: In my arrangement, I removed the background electric guitar. It cleaned it up a bit for me, so I recommend giving it a shot. Nice job otherwise.
Roothaven City: Little known fact, I composed this song based on Petalburg City. The brass may be a bit too "fat and brassy," if you know what I mean. I'm keen on this arrangement otherwise.
Unknown City: What a cute arrangement. I vote to keep this in the soundtrack. Well done, I'm impressed.

Dungeon Themes

I think the link is directed to the wrong spot. :x

Minigame Themes

Triple Triad: I'm glad you used my composition. I'm quite thrilled with the instrumentation you used. The only disgruntling part is the transition from A to B, but that is my fault as the composer. I hope to give you a better version to work with soon.

Route Themes

Mountainous Foothills: A heroic arrangement, indeed. I think the trumpet could be lowered an octave or two; it's a little too piercing to me. Well done overall.
Route 205: A great arrangement. I'm disappointed in how short it is, which is again my fault.
Route 212: I love the arragements where you get to express mystery and instability into the atmosphere. You do a great job. My vote is to officialize this.
Route to Aquapolis: Glad to see that the arrangements I had are finally being given a home. Your arrangment captures mine quite well and I'm quite content with this.
Route to Pokemon League: Oversaturation is a huge problem here. I like the direction where this is heading and look forward to your attempt at eliminating the over-the-top intensity.
Route to Sedcini and Laysan: Excellent arrangement. Just the right amount of edge at the beginning. It's apparent you know how to arrange. I'm not sure I agree with the repeat point, though. Seems disconnected.
Road to Gallea City: Awesome work. I love it.

Topaz Titles/New Game Themes

Title Screen: I think the oversaturation is a little too evident here. I would say the atmosphere was captured quite well, though.
Topaz Intro: Brass is a little too edgy in the very beginning. There needs to be a darker sound, I think. The soprano and upper voices are overpowering. The faster-paced section is done well, but sounds hollow.

Overall, I'm quite impressed. Again, I'm slightly skeptical due to the oversaturation in some songs, but I think it can be worked through. And, STT, I think I can speak for the rest of the staff and community - thank you for the hard work you've done. It is truly appreciated. Keep it up and good luck with your musical growth. I'm excited to be able to have you working with me on this soundtrack.

Omgsplosion it's an Irot! With advice and commentary on a level I could never give!

I'm sorry if I haven't stressed this enough either, but thanks STT for picking up music for us, your hard work is really appreciated. And Frost Town and Mountainous Foothills are songs I can put on repeat and listen to on Songbird :3

On another note, this won't be happening anytime soon, but one of the summatives I just did at school involved writing music to a video that the art students made, and I found that, well, I was capable-ish of writing short, repetitive tunes. The kind that might be useful for a game. However, I have no harmony training (I have to play it by ear, literally), no midi-writing software and no talent at instrumentation, so perhaps sometime during late July or August, if I manage to pump out a couple of tunes on Finale, will you arrange them STT?

Quinn

I just thought of this, but we now have tori back, along with STT right? DAMN! With all the arrangments and remixes, Topaz is going to have a good soundtrack.

Although I can't help with creating music, nor can I help with more "detailed" constructive critisim, I can still give advise. In fact, my bro is in the radio company. He develops some audio himself, so although I dont know too much about it, I've done things before, and I know some faint basics. Not saying I'm gonna become a composer, just saying, with my brother and all, he has taught me and I've got detailed hearing now. (which is ironic knowing when I was little, I was def :P. Strange how things go)

Battle! Unknown: Is this an arrangement? If not, excellent work. Sometimes the synthesizers are a little overwhelming. But I absolutely love the atmosphere.

It seems mellotrons can fool the composer! This is actually an arranged version of Giratina-o from Platinum. Unison phasing on the dual drum tracks (yep, two drum tracks) was unintentional, but it sounds awesome.

Topaz Intro: Brass is a little too edgy in the very beginning. There needs to be a darker sound, I think. The soprano and upper voices are overpowering. The faster-paced section is done well, but sounds hollow.

My soundset is at fault there, the blasted bass winds only go down to C4!

Unknown City: What a cute arrangement. I vote to keep this in the soundtrack. Well done, I'm impressed.

Veridian City for ya!

Olivine City: In my arrangement, I removed the background electric guitar. It cleaned it up a bit for me, so I recommend giving it a shot. Nice job otherwise.

There's another version which I haven't uploaded (stupid me!) that has a much cleaner sound to the guitar.

Your Kalypso link goes to the wrong place, but I found it anyhow. :P

Kalypso City: I like most of the sounds here, though I think I might like a more "gritty, in-your-face" type of brass in the B section. I'll get you my new version in midi also because there are a few changes. Also, you might want to change the quica from closed to open, I ended up doing that.

Olivine City: Sound fantastic. Might want to cut the remainder off in Audacity if you can. Could cause looping issues later.

Colossus City: This is definitely your best version so far. I love the main synth in the beginning, though I don't care too much for the flutey sound of the organ. A more drawbar-like organ would probably sound a lot better. I love the drumset, except for the tom-toms. They stick out a bit, so if you can adjust the volume of them, it'd be absolutely wonderful. As for the portamento at the end, I love it. The echo. Everything. I'd recommend one thing with the B section... for the Ondes Martenot, I would find a synth that compliments the lead synth, because right now I don't hear a secondary synth on the melody. Great job!

ImmunityBow
12-29-10, 06:40 PM
Kalypso City: I'm actually not a fan of the (tom-tom?) drum you added in the first section. I can't say for sure, but it adds lots of minor intervals that are a little jarring and add too much anxiety when the place is supposed to be pretty laid back and sunny-paradise-like. In the B section, the drum that sounds like a hihat also sounds a little urgent, but that whole section is a little less relaxed anyhow. Otherwise it's fine. When the theme isn't playing at the end (the trailing part before it loops) I like how the drums fill in the space, though.

Olivine: Sounds great. No saturation issues, upbeat, pleasing to the ear. Good job! I hear the looping issues too.

Colossus City: It definitely sounds very city-techno-like and probably captures Colossus' don't-care-'bout-nature attitude. The main thing I like here is that it feels different from Midgar Sector (7 was it? The one where Cloud cross-dresses) which was my main issue with the original version.

Quinn

Lets see...I like the v4 of dynamo. Sounds really "fun" yet also, it seems a calm feel too.

I've been gone a good while, so is Kalypso more of a rainforest feel? I think the drums are alright, though I'm wondering bout the birds and water. Cause if it has the feel, it would already have the water sound when you near water too, so it would be LOTS OF WATER (not saying that isn't a bad thing ;) but still) the birds have a question on me, but idc either way. ha

Olivine has a really good feel, but yet again, what about the famous intro?
Like listen...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdUbP6G1g2E&feature=related
you here the couple beats before the music starts. Those I for one think are a needed thing. Other than that, it sounds good. Really good

I can't listen to Colossus right now. Soddy :/

Funny, everyone here talks about the intruments except me. I talk based on "the feel". Lol. Sorry again. I dont know bout many intruments.

Frost Town: I could use a little more from the melody - the celesta is being overpowered by the glockenspiel. I love the B section. A nice round, dark sound without oversaturation. Make sure you cut the silence at the end. ;P

Mt. Mist: I really enjoyed this arrangement, sometimes the middle voices stick out a little in the choral texture - this could be because of the instrument changing timbre as it goes through its range (most choir synths do this unfortunately). Loving the dark sounding gong. ;)

Rival Battle: Nice work. This could just be me, but I'm hearing something really wonky with the overtones on the organ, which is too bad because I really like its tone. I need somebody to confirm this, though... I'm losing my sense of hearing in my right ear, so it honestly could just be me.

Keep up the good work, STT. I'll try to pump out some more music for you to play with soon. :)

Frost Town: As Irot said, the B section works beautifully now. I really liked your old version of the A section though! Could you somehow recreate that with the new instruments?

Mt. Mist: Seems fine. It's not very Pokemon-y anymore, but then again, neither are the canon game songs, so I can't really blame you on that.

Rival Battle: One of the eternal criticisms of this one since its first creation is that there are far too many beats at the beginning. Getting rid of at least two would really help reduce that feeling that the song is tripping. The organ sounds fine to me.

It is very quiet, that's definitely true. And it's very difficult to tell when something is wonky if it's all perfect fifths. Those are built to sound "correct", aren't they? D:

During Expressionism and on (post-modern music), perfect fifths in parallel motion are common, but in my tonal music, parallel fifths in a set key structure would produce certain spots of dissonance, which is what I think I'm hearing.

Title Screen, fourth version (http://www.mediafire.com/?7la67vxr6f2aq07): Oh my God this was a pain in the ass to get right. I literally had to split the track in two then stitch it back together in FL's playlist editor because Edirol (my VST) only supports up to 16 concurrent channels and this had around 20. I had to cut out and combine the three violins, re-export the midi, do the brass and strings, export that, then cut the midi channels for them out the second time through, export as midi AGAIN, re-import, THEN do the drums, bells and woodwinds, tweak volume of the pre-rendered brass and strings, export the whole song as an MP3, then reduce volume of the whole thing in Audacity. Major pain to do, but it's DONE. HOORAY.

It's nice. Just a couple spots where the volume drops and I can barely hear the progression from one chord to another.
