    Default Professor Willow

    Okay. Let's try this again.

Posted this a little while ago, and was told that Professor Willow is female. Blame it on the massive amounts of cake and ice cream I've had today [brother's birthday party] or the lack of sleep, but I sprited the above image with the Professor in mind. In my defense, I would like to cite the Topaz storyline:

With new hope of finding your friend, you set out. Realizing that, in this day and age with so much violence on Team Rocket's part, it would be foolish to go without your own Pokemon. Luckily, Pokemon expert Professor Willow recently moved to Neo Bay and keeps large numbers of Pokemon in his lab.
    Am I losing it?

Please don't point out the obvious failure of a mod that can't remember the Professor's gender. Just point me in the right direction.

If I'm not mistaken, Professor Willow was originally supposed to be a man, but then for gender balance and also because Willow just sounds like a woman's name, it was decided the Prof. was to be a woman.

Anyway, for the sprite, I can't help but get the feeling that the legs are popping out and the lab coat is behind them. Is there anything you can do to fix that?

You could make that into the topaz version of the scientist though.

Just slap some breasts on it, give it a ponytail, and call it a day. It could pass for female.

That arm holding the Pokeball looks a little wonky, maybe have it bend inwards?

Also the outline could be a tad lighter.

Looks good, but another thing: when you make a splice, can you show which sprites were the inspiration? Thanks.

The face is taken directly from Cynthia's sprite. Still, that's not too obvious of a splice, except for the fact that the rest of her resembles Cynthia as well. You should edit the face a little, then either change her hair or change her costume.

I think I can make an edit that's not too obvious. I've done it before...

The pokeball is deformed. It's kinda oblong instead of circluar.

It doesn't look very lab-coaty right now, and I think we're still going with that kind of look. It dosen't have a pocket or anything, so that might help. It may also be that it's too form fitting and needs to be more... blocky. Perhaps if it wasn't done up more like your male one...? Not sure if that made any sense but in essence it looks more like a gym leader or something than a scientist/professor IMO.

I was going for a new spin on the traditional lab coat look. But if that's what we're looking for, then:

Wait a minute, is the professor going to be available for battle in the game, or do we only need a sprite for the opening intro? If it's the latter, then the professor shouldn't be a normal trainer sprite at all.

Didn't see neon's comment for a while. It might be a cool idea to actually battle Professor Willow sometime during the game.

But yes, having a larger intro sprite would probably be better. But do we have anyone who actually works on that scale? I can try, though it'll take me a while.

Which size are we going for? Not really sure how to go about this.

    Bigger? Smaller?

Try 140 height. I just compared screen sizes (with the Emerald intro, extrapolating for the size of the game in RMXP) and it should fit at 140 tall.

I realize pixel art at that size is difficult but there are quite a few problems I can see. Let's try resizing it and see what it comes out to.

I feel that if we're going to both with making a pixel-art intro sprite it may as well be in a pose that is suited for that one (such as Prof. Oak's). I'll sketch up something quick on the train tomorrow and will somehow turn it either into digital or pixel art. If it's digital then all that's needed is a pixel-over, anyhow.

Here it is! I think this is a good start, though the concept is different from yours, MewLover.

It's about 120 tall, which is about 12 pixels shorter than Professor Oak.

I'm especially proud of the hair. I've never quite managed to do anything with hair before, and here I did it!

I like it and the hair does look good! Something bothers me about her left foot though, it seems to stick inwards in an awkward pose while her right is facing a different (and more natural) angle. The right foot does actually look good in the way that it faces the direction that the character is facing.

Something feels weird about the face. The eyes seem slightly off, and the shading near the bottom looks weird. For some reason I got a Socialite vibe from it (I think it's the mouth... maybe it's just me):

Other than that, it looks pretty good to me.

I agree that the face seems off. It doesn't look Pokémon-styled enough to me for some reason.
I could take a swing at it.

    yes/no?
I borrowed elements from both MewLoverEX and ImmunityBow. It's in Prof. Rowan's Intro Sprite's style (or as close to it as possible)

TBH I HATE feet like that. It's retardedly over-emphasised pigeon-footed. I never got why they had to put some many of them in DP. Honestly, just flipping one of the feet and ltering shading is SUCH an improvement (talking about the DP sprites but refers to this as well. No, I'm not bitching).

    That's excellent X-Antibody.

She does look a little too young though, the miniskirt doesn't help, and she has to have a hand open for a Pokeball, no? And of course the Lab Coat needs to show behind, though I would shorten the lab coat to stress her individuality over the other professors. Also it's a little stiffly straight, I would fit the lab coat to her body more. All in all she reminds me a bit of Emma Skye from Phoenix Wright , and Emma's 16.

    You really caught the style!

Yes, just fix those minor issues and it will be a fantastic sprite - even suitable for use in site/forum designs.

Thanks! I made the changes. Wasn't sure what I could do about making her look older so I played with her hair a bit.
Consistent changes: Shorter labcoat, no miniskirt, pants are red, shoes are blue, right hand sticks out, labcoat has buttons.
    1
    Original
    2
Changes from 1: Hair has been cut short.
    3
Changes from 2: Two little twirly strands of hair come out from behind the neck. [because those are cool]
    4
Changes from 2: A small tuft of hair is seen behind the neck
    5
Changes from 2: An earring can be seen.
    6
Changes from 3: An earring can be seen.

HAVE A VOTE. If that is necessary.

I think 4 with two earrings. But 1 with two longer earrings (like, hanging down low enough to see) seems like an interesting idea to me too.

4 with earrings would be perfect. I really like the tuft of hair behind, the shorter hair really makes her look a lot more mature, and so do the earrings. Another small thing you might want to work on is making the hands a bit bigger. Pokemon-style hands are usually proportioned similarly to IRL hands: about 1/2-2/3 as big as the head.
