View Full Version : The Gym Suggestions.
In the suggestions thread, someone talked about having possibly "unique" gyms to fit the trainers pokemon and/or the area. I'm for this, so I made a horrible, quick possibility. (Someone said battle frontier, so I used it :P)

Definitly an interesting idea. It could use a different roof color, though.
its not my suggestion though. I dont remember whos it was. That being said, maybe we could get some submissions?

The top of the gym looks like a pyramid. Pyramids remind of a town in Caldera/Kirant. Perhaps we could have different roofs for each gym to match something in the town or city the gym belongs too.

Well whatever we do, we need to make a decision soon. Do we want to go with standard gyms or a more unique format?
We have to get the first two gyms ready for the demo.
isn't it fire and flying right?
ImmunityBow
06-24-10, 01:30 AM
I don't think any of us are skilled enough to make a fire-typed gym. I'd say scrap the idea for the demo but keep it as a possibility for the full game (things can change between a demo and a full game, no?)

Well, I thought I'd try my hands on these. Haven't done any sprite work since '07 so I was wayyy rusty. I had trouble balancing all the cool stuff I could add with keeping the distinct gym building facade, and in the end settled with just a few details for each. Anyway, I did the first two gyms since they're obviously the most important right now. Criticism is welcome.

This view always throws me off though, so I may be mistaken. I don't think we should be able to see so much of the top of the smokestacks. I think they would be at a slightly steeper angel so that they're pointing up more.
Cyndadile
06-24-10, 12:22 PM
I thought that the smokestacks should be more circular, and I had some spare time, so... (a minor change)

I'm not so sure about that Cyndadile, it now looks like the bottom should be round too.
But wow, neon, I stand corrected. Those look really well done.
One thing that could be a little bit of a concern is that Froy's gym could be mistaken for a Steel-type gym, and that Therma's gym doesn't really show that it's a Flying-type gym, but I think what you were going for was something that could mesh with the cities they're in, right? They look great.
Cyndadile
06-24-10, 03:38 PM
I think that Therma's looks like it is a golden bird cage.
Also, what gym are you using as a base? I'd like to try some of these (I might be able to actually do one).
I see how he was going. A furnace and a Library. If I get some time, I could possibly put up some as well, but thats up in the air. For the time, wih some little changes, I think that could work.
Neon...do you by chance have the tilesheet? If not either me or IB could get that for you.
by chance, you dont think I could use Neons as bases for mine? I like em alot. I just kind a think a couple changes could be used. I've got an Idea, with windmills, and fans for Therma's. And I'm still thinking about Froy's
to cyndaquil and all others who wanna use.

I just stole the smokestack from the FRLG power plant sprite, made it smaller, and stuck it on the roof. Although if anyone else feels it's a weird perspective I can try fixing it.
Yes, I did try matching them with the actual towns. Quinn was spot-on, Froy's gym is a furnace while Therma's gym is a library. I also had concerns that Froy's gym would look like a steel-type gym, which is why I gave it a bright red roof. The colors of Therma's gym matches the oriental buildings in Softwind. It is kinda hard to tell what type the gym is, though I'm stuck on how to make it more obvious.
And if anybody's interested, here's the base sprite I used. The top one is the normal gym and the bottom one doesn't have windows. Feel free to use anything I provide. I'll also try to do a couple more as well.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y274/neonscreen/gymbase.png
I got right on!!!!! POWNAGE!!!! lolz.
I hope you dont mind Neon, but I used yours anyways.
This is what I've gotten. (I think they should be animated, since they are the "big, important awesome buildings"
Froy: (not much change, except pillars, "gym" and windows, which Ironicly, I think gave it more "heat")
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd123/quintinbruderer/Topaz/Cranewing-Gym.gif
Therma: Kept the library theme, but added "air" if you couldn't tell. That windmill was hard, but I think I got it perfected.

Good job, Quinn.
Have the interior of the gyms been created?
badgerdude1347

Cyndadile is right. So what if the exterior looks good. What's the interior supposed to look like?
I suggest for Therma, have rotating platforms that your supposed to walk on that eventually lead to the Leader. For Froy, I'd give the gym a large generator filled with maze leading to him.

Some ideas for Fernando(?):

I don't like my roof. It looks too bright. It also needs more stuff.
Fernando's grass right? I'm liking it. Something funny is throw a couple Trees and TALL grass up on the top
Cyndadile
06-25-10, 05:01 PM
Oh, and I forgot to put the thing that says "gym" on it...
that doesn't need to be there. If you do put it there though, maybe a Dark green or a Blue would look good. Or maybe even a gold.

Small edit, how's this?
http://cyndadile.webs.com/Fernando's%20Gym%20Larger%202.png
I was thinking maybe Safari Zone trees somewhere? I tried, but failed. I might try again soon-ish.
Maybe I could use it, and revamp it? I can't think of any animation for it yet, but I could work with trees and that shtuff.

Sounds good. I like what you did with the other 2.
I would have had vines, but I only found moss. I don't know if you people do this, but I just stole colors and items from elsewhere. This happened to all be from the safari zone, or that city that it is in (grass roof, moss from buildinge, couple other things).

Isn't he poison? That could be swamp-like. Green and purple all over.
wow these gyms look awesome!!!
maybe i should change up the gyms in my region but i'll wait first since it's still gotta be figured out...
the gyms look great so far and i like the windmill gym but maybe a slightly smaller windmill on top???
and possibly the fact that it could slow down and even stop for a while (following the way real windmills work according to the weather)
but i wouldn't go any farther than that...
I could see about the windmill smaller, though the real ones have HUGE propeller thingies. The stopping thing, I'm not so sure of though...might be a bit tough to program that, knowing they are only frames.
I got back from swimming so I'm gonna work with Fernando's gym, with the trees.
that's cool...
you don't have to slow it down or stop it if it's gonna take too much to make it work it was just some thoughts..
i understand the large blades on a windmill but this looks like it might annoy people by being in the way or moving too much...
outside of that though it looks great and i can handel the movement and size i thought it'd be better smaller since it's not a big town (last i remember)
If I find the time, I'l' shorten them a bit, but the stop and change direction thing I couldn't do...unless the gif was reversed.

Quinn, I like what you did with Froy's gym. Not a big fan of Therma's gym though (no pun intended). It's supposed to be a library, fans just don't make sense. It'll also clash with the rest of the city.
Also, I'm not sure how RPG Maker XP works, but aren't all animations done frame-by-frame? If so you'll have to include all the frames as well, and not just a .gif file (which I'm not sure is even usable).
Cyndadile
06-25-10, 10:41 PM
I do think that it needs more of a flying-type feel, though.
give the turbines da boot and give a birds nest for therma
*neon. Since I had 2003, unless things have changed, its frames. I would give all frames (3-4, I forgot) to badara, and like water, it would animate.
*Silver. Done deal, although I would really like it if the windmill stayed.
I'll get an edit of therma's gym done tonight, since its needed ASAP.
Not by best, but still something.

I like the recolor, 3 is not bad, but something on it seems... off for a gym.
the front grass kept pissing me off...though it might look better with only the trees and that back layer?
Edit to the Therma Gym.
Smaller propellers on the windmill and birds nest, some containing "fincherp" eggs.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd123/quintinbruderer/Topaz/softwind.gif
Edit: I just found something about animated gifs and RPG maker XP
However when using GIF animation images, a script must be input into the database for the animation to display, otherwise the image is inanimate. I dont know if 4 png frames would be easier, or if the Gif would be easier, but gifs can be used.

I think Badara uses frame-by-frame but I could be wrong. I'll get in touch with him and hopefully have him look at this thread.
I like what I'm seeing here. It would be good if we could focus on Froy and Therma's gyms as we need those for the demo. That really needs to be the priority, and the rest of the gyms can be done later.
I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record but we really need to tighten our focus and look towards our immediate goal instead of past it.
True. So, I was thinking today, and I was remembering how we should make Therma's gym more "flying like". I didn't come up with anything, BUT (i'm gonna talk about past the demo for a sec) I saw a possible other place for the windmill if we dont like it for Therma's. The Dynamo Gardens leader, Gerald. Its up in the sky, and it makes electricity. Sounds perfect as part of his gym, with some other tweaks. Anyways, so my Froy edit seems good to go, but what about Therma? should we keep the Windmill there, or put it on the Dynamo Garden Gym? If so, what should we replace it with?
ikkyblob
06-28-10, 02:07 AM
I think Dynamo's might look better with huge electric coil tower things.
nothing stopping us from having both. Though I would love to have my windmill somewhere.

Therma Idea!

06-28-10, 03:32 AM
I'm just giving ideas for the interior designs of the gyms.
Therma: Someone said library if im not wrong so it could be like blaine's gym back in fr/lg where you have to answer the questions correctly too pass with out needing too battle. Therma's gym could be like that but since it is a flying type gym, it could use a little change. A more eco friendly environment. Books on tables to rerplace the quiz machines in blaine's gym and maybe if you answer a question wrongly, you would fall through a hole and have to start all over again. the junior trainers could be standing around.
Froy's gym: Perhaps froy's gym could be more like brawly's gym. All dark. But unlike Brawly's gym where you have defeat a junior trainer to make the gym brighter, We could have three fireplaces ( To go with the three chimneys outside) That you need to light up to make the gym brighter. The annoying guy at the entrance could give you a lighter to help you light the fireplaces and the junior trainers could ambush you in the darkness like in brawly's gym.
Fernando's GYM: Tall grass with wild pokemon and no junior trainers in a gym? It's a unique suggestion.
Hanzo's gym: Following what cyndadile said, It could look more like a swamp inside with lots of trainers in disguise as trees and rocks everywhere. And mud like in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum's safari zone.
Gerald's gym: A nice place with three electrical gates blocking you from reaching the leader. There could be some smalll generators in the gym that you have turn off to make the electrical gates dissapear. And there could be junior trainers in the gym.
I can't remember the rest though.
And for therma's gym (outside) you could have a huge nest on it and do what Quinn said. have the electric propellers at the dynamo gardens gym.
the 1st two interiors are already done (or I think so, last time I remember). Outside. I'm all for a giant nest (and big bird wing) I would do that, but I am pretty busy right now. If I get time I will though. (No promice. As a normal person, no authority, say, "SOMEONE ELSE, GET TO WORK ON IT, AND FAST! the demo NEEDS it. Gotta be decided soon.
and have my windmill part of dynamo's gym. (and/or just a tile around the city) I really dont wanna just toss it.
Cranky Guy
06-28-10, 04:07 AM
Don't tell me they chopped of Lugia's wing for a gym!
HAHAHAHAHA. Now that you say that though, that might seem like a good base, for someone else of course. I suck at wings...along with everything else spriting wise.
someone should start making a gym!
revamp to grass one (not to get off topic)
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd123/quintinbruderer/Topaz/FernandosGym.png
still might need work on the edges though.
neon.Barnacle
06-28-10, 06:31 PM
I warned before about going over the top with gym designs. Adding wings is definitely going over the top. So is having trees on the roof. Completely unnecessary.
ImmunityBow
06-28-10, 10:28 PM
Maybe instead of trees or grass on the roof you can have vines hanging down?
or using the smaller/thinner trees...
but yeah i think i like the vines idea better...

06-29-10, 12:42 AM
Then I guess it should be a big owl nest. (owls are thought of as wise, library gym, it fits)

here's a thought...
Noctowl Statue...
not too big mind you but just large enough for the players to get the idea...
kinda like those sandshrew statues or whatever they are from FRLG when heading towards victory road...
Cranky Guy
07-01-10, 02:18 PM
Noctowl statue doesn't make any sense. I've got two crazy ideas for therma's gym (insert evil laugh). It's supposed to have something to do with books, right? the roof could be a huge book that is open and there are pictures of various bird pokemon(Perhaps a picture of the gym badge would also be nice.). And now the other idea. What about a nice, fluffy cloud on the roof of the gym?
actually, I can kinda see noctowl statues as a good idea. They are smart, and they are flying. Is he in our dex though? A closed book maybe, but an open one, with all that stuff, just sounds like too much. Same with a cloud. Do we have any "smart" bird pokemon in our dex? The best I could think of is a "Smallard" statue, but I'm not so sure if he's "smart" enough for that.
Cyndadile
07-01-10, 04:29 PM
I think that Noctowl would be good regardless. I was going to try to make a statue using HGSS sprites, but it is flying in those.

It never says anywhere in the canon games that Skarmory has higher intelligence than other Pokemon...
A Skarmory in the 2nd Gym would be pretty overpowered. It would work in a rematch, though.
Isn't the Softwind Gym supposed to have a library motif? Or are we changing that?
SilentSentinel
07-03-10, 06:17 AM
It's supposed to be a library, yes, but the problem is conveying that while giving the feeling that it's a flying gym.
Since it's a Gym that's also a library, it needs to have more of a mystical feel than a mechanical one.
some of those libraries in new york have the big lion statues, so bird statues for ours. Thats how I was thinkin it.
Cyndadile
07-03-10, 08:16 PM
I was thinking a standing Noctowl, if possible.
what Quinn said is basically what i was thinking of when it came to the Noctowl statue idea.
the one with the open wings wouldn't be bad someplace else like in the gym behing the gym leader or elsewhere in the city.
and if yall are going to have the region connected to johto it would be a good idea to have noctowl in there somewhere though i'm not entirely sure as to how Nintendo chooses the pokemon from the previous games that would be found in the newer regions...
Even if Noctowl isn't native to Caldera, it doesn't mean they won't know about them and make statues of them. After all, lions aren't native to New York City.
shouldn't this be decided soon? Get this done and move on type of thing.
neon.Barnacle
07-08-10, 03:05 PM
We're kinda stuck until we have the whole gym leader do-overs sorted out. Therma might even be changing cities.
that isn't too swell, knowing that we need IB for that. There isn't anything stopping us from keeping her there for the time, (if needed for the demo) and then later, changing it.
Totally serious...I'm kinda sad with the gyms now. I had the hottest looking water gym made, but we aren't gonna have one...so I just had to delete it. Not friendly for a water lover. I dont know whats gonna happen with the changes...so I'm holding off now. We still need to finish the Therma Gym for the demo at least. Froy's is done :D but Therma, shes just bouncing back and forth.
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-08-10, 11:45 PM
Just thought I'd mention we don't need any for the demo.
we kinda do. Thats why Froy and Therma were the 1st on the list. They are NEEDED! The others can wait a bit, like Fernando or Gerald (or however you spell it.) Froy's is done, but Therma's has had tons of ideas.
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-09-10, 08:42 AM
tually they're not. They would be NICE but not NEEDED. I mean, oh no, how did the official games and pretty much all the hacks out there along with most of the fangames cope without individually styled gyms?! [/sarcasm]

Seriously, though, you two need to stop getting sarcastic with each other. You can be critical and nice.
lol...how many people in the last couple months have I argued with? I dont even know...but I know at least 2-3. I dont do sarcasm though much...unless it is a nice joke.
Anyways...true. They AREN'T needed, but we dont want our work to go to waste. Lets finish the last gym for the demo, and save ourselves some heartache.
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-09-10, 04:37 PM
Or you couldd not rush it since it won't go to waste. I would like to point out an very obvious fact now.
THIS IS A DEMO. STUFF WILL STILL BE WORKED ON AN INCLUDE IN THE WHOLE GAME AFTER THE DEMOS RELEASE. WORK DOESN'T JUST STOP.
And now a word from our sponsors:
Cheesecake. *walks off*
And with that the show's over goodbye!
[/random mood of randasity]
The demo is our "showcase". We make it good, we get people...we make it bad, we keep working as is, maybe even lose a couple. If we are this close, shouldn't we just wrap it up in a pretty little bow?
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-09-10, 05:03 PM
Never show all your cards.
And what if the idea falls through? What if we can't make some of the gyms that occur later than the end of the demo? We'd either have it half doneish upon full rrelease or not there, unless we're sure we shou;dn't put it in the demo since people'll think it's a garunteed (spelling fail I know) in the full version.
Mediocrity_Incarnate
07-09-10, 10:39 PM
Why dont we just do the two gyms now and have little hissy fits about it later?
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-09-10, 11:01 PM
Because if this drags on for too long and you still insist it be in the demo, if people give in to you (note the ifs in the sentence) the demo'll take longer.
not if we continue as is. I can't quote exacty, but on the repository thread, when zero was talking about what to show and not, someone said we shouldn't show all our cards (not exactly that, but still) "yet we need to show enough to bring people in". This might be one of our golden tickets. Along with the fakemon, the new places, completely new storyline, awesome looking maps (until I showed up lolz.) and cool looking gyms. I mean, there isn't anything stopping us from making the gyms even BETTER, (along with the others and possibly new ones).

Cranky Guy
07-10-10, 07:04 AM
BTG, it doesn't really matter if the demo is late, is it? Plus, we are almost done with the gyms(I think). And isn't there still a lot of work for the release of the demo? And instead of just arguing with quinn, u could be help us with the gyms. It would get finished faster if u helped.
yes if we actually worked on the gyms rather than argue it'd be a little better and a heck of a lot faster...
so to go over things:
anywhere from 8-12 gyms (is that right?)
so far like 2-4 gyms are complete with their own personal styles
arrangement of a couple of gym leaders is in needed
and i was wondering what will the other 4 or so gyms be giving out or are they just "empty" gyms (meaning no hms)
Ironicly, I have yet to see softwind's gym in a while.
The added gym leaders aren't a confirmation yet. Dont wanna venture into the dark.
Like all games, some gym badges allow HM use, while others just do either nothing or add speed power, or attack or whatever.
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-12-10, 11:11 PM
Every Gym allows a specific HM use, starting from GSC I believe.
Cyndadile
07-12-10, 11:24 PM
Starting from RBY, I thought. Except for the Kanto gyms in GSC, and 7 Kanto and 1 Johto gym in HGSS.
Who unlocks what depends on how the Leaders end up rearranged.
...while others just do either nothing or add speed power, or attack or whatever.
How did they do that in the games, anyway? Did they give everyone on your current team a certain amount of effort points?
^I actually have no idea. I think it just made it so when you level up, you get a pinch more, though I'm not sure. O.o
Black Temple Gaurdian
07-13-10, 08:11 AM
I think it may have just been a +1 on said stat by default.
i'm thinking it's an event switch where if you have badge # u get stat # or you're allowed to use hm/move #
basically it would consist of about 8 switches where you would turn them on after obtaining each badge. So what'd happen would be you get like Brock's badge or something and then it'll turn on the switch for having gained the Stone Badge (or whatever it was) and it would then allow you to use the HM Cut (or whatever) as well as turning on the script for boosting something like the Attack Stat by 1...
And the 'every gym has an HM' didn't appear until RSE and was later applied to FRLG where you had to go to like 3 island or something to obtain HM 08 Waterfall.
Also I'm thinking that if we're still working on the gyms by the time the demo comes out we could just leave the standard gyms and locations of each leader alone but put in something with one of them saying "I'm going to change gyms in a couple of months." as a way of letting people know that the gym leader will be in a new location by the time the completed game comes out. Course it would also be good to put in something like gyms closed for renovation should somebody manage to make it to the 3rd gym or go back to gyms 1 & 2, along with each gym leader saying they're gonna change the look of their own gym to make them look a little more like the types they have.
Doing this could allow us to continue work on the gyms while the work for the demo is continuing and then after the demo's released start adding on the extra gyms and changing the existing ones. So we can now fight over what happens to some of the gym leaders and the way each gym is supposed to look...---An alternative to changing the gyms is they could say: "I'm thinking of changing gyms soon..." or something like that so just in case we all decide that the gym leaders should stay put we wont look like idiots for having kept them there when they said they're gonna change when...
lets get some bird going on! Dont mind the black in the back.

That's therma's right? Why not just have spinning blades type fans? It represents air (which is classed under Flying) and thermals (tying in with Therma's name) and is linked to the library thing (AC anyone?).
THATS WHAT I HAD BEFORE. Along with the windmill of course, but still.
come one people...I dont wanna be jumping back and forth.

Actually, looking at your orginal gym for Therma, I like it better than any of the others you did for it. Just replace the windmill with something more library-y. OH I KNOW, you know the glass bits of the roof of I-think-it's-Silph Co. ? Have that down the middle. It'll look like a skylight for more relaxing reading.
So yeah, if you can post your original Therma's gym sans windmill, I'll make the edits.
actually a skylight does make sense cause i've been a few libraries and they all have skylights of some form especially the one i'm in...
yep
kinda one of the reasons why i'm not really able to do much on here cept comment and criticize....
btw i like ur bug sig.
my library looks like it's 2 stories tall but it's only 1 and the central "hallway" has windows over it (the 2nd story part) and can be problematic should you come in by about 11 or 12 when the sun decides to show thru and blind you...
yep
btw i like ur bug sig.
thanx
looks like the skyroof was already talked about :P damn it! Oh well. Check it out on my gift area.
it can still be talked about we haven't settled on how it'll look just yet...

Why do the exteriors have to be different? Can't they all be the same like in the original games? Also, I would like to help for the design of the interior. I wouldn't use regular tile sets, it would just be a very basic map of the gym, but with puzzle elements mixed into it. I don't think we have to worry about Froy's gym in the way of puzzle elements, because it seems to be a pattern that the first gym never has any kind of puzzle elements, just a straight path to the leader with a couple trainers, sometimes with another path to avoid said trainers. It's the other eleven gyms where puzzles may need to be thought of. Someone else suggested a trivia sort of thing for Softwind, which makes sense. The grass gym could have pitfalls that send you down to the basement where trainers lurk. Ice gym could be freezing and melting ice. I'll try to make something for the first couple of gyms, just because I want something to do.

Aw, crap! My gym isn't accepted by the album because it's so big. I have it done, I just need to go resize it.
Edit: Just resized it and the album still wont accept it! Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Split it up into smaller pieces, maybe fourths or eights or something, and save each one separately. Then just post the images here and arrange them in the shape of the gym as a whole.

I really like Softwind's layout.
ImmunityBow
01-23-11, 03:54 AM
Softwind's layout is aesthetically very pleasing but I'm worried that some people mind find the puzzle a little too boring?
Maybe if we just made the info really interesting it'd work out fine. Also, you might want to make sure more of the tiles allow you to read the books because sometimes trainers could walk up in front of the books and block them off, which would be really annoying.
I'm actually really game for making things up about the Topaz world, it's one of my favourite parts of the creation process. So I'll try to come up with something.
Tyrannigon64
01-23-11, 04:04 AM
I was thinking that the trainers wouldn't approach you until they you're right in front of the book.
ImmunityBow
01-23-11, 04:09 AM
Just for programming's sake, it's easier to place one event on two tiles than for the programmer to have to check every time he places a trainer for changes to their line of sight.
Tyrannigon64
01-23-11, 04:12 AM
What do you mean by placing an event on two tiles? How about they just go back to where they were when you finish battling? Would that work?
ImmunityBow
01-23-11, 04:31 AM
That would take even longer. To get text to show when you press a button on a certain tile, you have to put something called an event on that tile which calls up the text. It's easy just to copy and paste one event on to more than one tile. It's a two-second fix that's way simpler than anything else.
Cyndadile

Why do the exteriors have to be different?
They don't, its just something we'd do for fun if we had the time.
I also like your idea for Softwind. Maybe, for the trainers, we could have them pacing around the bookcases while you are looking for the books? It might be difficult to progran, I don't know if moving trainers would work in RPGMXP.

M: Trainer. Switches between facing east and north every three seconds.
N: Door. If player goes through it, places player in the extra room one space east of P.
O: Wolfe.
P: Door. If player goes through it, places player on the bridge one space west of N.
Q: Princess. If any of the trainers see her, they will battle you like normal, if they haven't already, and then take her back to the extra room. The trainers won't care if they see you, unless they haven't battled you yet. She will somehow get the gate lowered so you can fight Wolfe. Alternatively, this is a suit of armour. If a trainer sees you wearing it, they will take it away from you. They won't care if they see you without it. It allows you to get through fire. (Make sure you've read all of A to fully understand this)
I'd like some feedback, at least telling me if this could possibly be used, or if it would be too hard to program. I would also like some feedback for Portwind gym.

Seems good, though of course it'd have to be tested first because it's hard to figure out a puzzle without actually playing it out.
that one you gotta think about, the liar one...ITS INSANELY awesome if what I hear is true bout the annoying guy...yet seems kinda tough for a more dumb based audience as of like myself. Not sayin it needs to be a cakewalk, just sayin maybe easier ish.
In reality, the guy just says "go talk to all the other people". Even if you can't logic it out, when you go back he'll likely reveal himself/herself to be Layla.

I like the liar idea as a concept, since it relates so well to the "evil" side of Dark-type moves rather than just the "lack of light" that doesn't embody most of them. As XTS said, since guessing wrong means you just have to fight the trainer, eventually you'll be led to Layla in the end. People might need the experience anyway and fight everyone else first since Layla's Pokemon are pretty high-leveled.

I played through Skobeloff gym by moving my cursor along the path and changing the colour of letters as I "press" the switches. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get stuck, but if someone sees a way, please tell me. As for Aquapolis, I'd like to have battling trainers be an option so that if you're not good at this kind of thing, you can battle the trainers. But it's so much more satisfying to figure it out. Were you able to figure it out, did you just look at the concept of it being a liar puzzle, or did you look at the spoilers?
ImmunityBow
02-06-11, 01:51 PM
I'll just spoiler tag everything in response:
It's not too difficult to work out mostly, because, by definition, people who say "X" tells the truth or otherwise eliminate others as liars can't be liars themselves, so that eliminates B to F totally from contention.
That leaves, G, H, I and the annoying guy. H can't be lying, because G would have to be lying, so there must be two, so A must be lying.
What I don't get is with G and I:
If G is lying, I is not lying, things work out.
If I is lying, G is not lying, things still work out.
So either one really could be lying. It doesn't matter anyway, since by now you know that A is lying, but still on principle there should be an answer.
Also, people might not realize that A is an option, and may not even realize they can go back and talk to him, which would a source of needless frustration. I think if you correctly deduce the second liar (whether it be G or I) they should say "As you probably have guessed, our leader is not who you suspect. Go back to the entrance and face your challenge." Or perhaps something even more obvious than that.
Tyrannigon64
02-06-11, 02:58 PM
But if you talk to H, you have to assume that there is a possibility of him telling the truth, so one could assume that it is possible that, for example, that E is lying, because he says that B is telling the truth, so both could be lying.
This is how one should figure it out.
G says that either B or I are lying. B says that I tells the truth, so that means that either he's lying, making I a liar, or he's telling the truth, making I a truth-teller, so G must be lying, because they both either lie or tell the truth.
Once you accuse him of being a liar (I still don't know how we should do that. Maybe a key that isn't normally used?), he'll be forced to tell the truth (didn't think of that part until after I posted) and he will say something along the lines of "I used to be a liar, but now I tell the truth (talking about himself, not the person "I"), although others still refer to me as a liar. Both B and I are telling the truth."
If you speak to I, who you now know tells the truth, he will tell you that either G or H is lying. You know that G is a liar, so H must be the truth teller.
H says that there are two liars. Logically, he must be telling the truth. He also says that D is not a liar. If you speak to D, he says that the people next to him (i.e. to his left and his right) are telling the truth.
We've already established that B tells the truth, but now we know that F tells the truth. F says that the gym leader is disguised. Maybe he should also say that the gym leader always lies and will reveal herself if you accuse her of lying.
E says that B tells the truth, which we know to be true. The last person left is C, and he says that he can not see the gym leader from where he stands no matter which direction he faces. He also says that the people he could see by looking in different directions tell the truth (see below the spoilers). We know that B and E tell the truth, so he must be telling the truth when he says that he can't see the gym leader. Confused, people will eventually talk to the annoying guy again, or check a walkthrough.
The annoying guy says says that there is one liar, though we already know that there are two. He also says that Ghost type attacks have no effect on Dark types, which is also not true. At this point, someone will either check a walkthrough or accuse the annoying guy as lying, then Layla reveals herself. Then the battle commences.
I think the only other ways to figure it out is to look up a walkthrough or battle everyone.
I also have an edit for one of the clues:
C now says "I can not see the gym leader from here, no matter which way I face, but the people I could see (B and E) are truth tellers.
ImmunityBow
02-06-11, 05:21 PM
Sorry, I was looking at the wrong clues, but I've still put my thought process regarding the change below. Changing C is irrelevant, as shown in the spoiler.
Unless you count the atrociously wrong typing description (Bug is SE on Dark, Ghost is NVE on Dark, not totally ineffective), then A isn't lying. All A does is command you to find a liar. That can't ever be interpreted as a lie. Better wording would be "One person here is a liar. That person is the gym leader you must face." Also, with this edit you don't need to make C so obvious, because those who are not gym leaders are automatically truth tellers anyway.
BCDEF are obviously cleared through easy logic, I had it written out but it was erased by an accidental page change so I won't rewrite it.
Now for G, H and I:
If G is lying B and I are either both lying or both telling the truth. Both can't be lying, obviously, since B is telling the truth (and because that would make 3-4 liars). Thus, both must be telling the truth. If I is indeed telling the truth since H isn't lying G must be lying. This is a possibility.
H can't be lying because D isn't lying, so A must be lying.
if I is lying G and H are either both lying or both telling the truth. As said before both can't be lying, thus both must be telling the truth. If G is telling the truth then since B isn't lying I is lying, this also a possibility.
Now that you've changed B to say that I is telling the truth it works out, but it didn't before you changed it.
Tyrannigon64
02-06-11, 05:51 PM
It isn't that A is lying, it's that he isn't telling the truth. He has to tell you what you're supposed to do. Him saying "That person is the gym leader you must face" is too confusing to figure out whether it's a lie or not. It is partially true, because one of the liars (him) is the gym leader, and partially false because he says that the only liar is the gym leader. I used a command because that's the only way I could think of to get the information across to the player without him technically telling the truth. We need to find some way for him to tell you what to do without telling the truth.
What easy logic did you use to rule out BCDE and F? It may not work due to the possibility of H telling the truth, therefore there could possibly be two liars. I'm guessing you used the logic of "If X says Y is telling the truth, X must be telling the truth, because if he was lying, they would both be lying", but both of them lying could technically happen because there is the possibility of two liars.
ImmunityBow
02-07-11, 03:41 AM
That doesn't work because A must then be a liar too, which makes for three liars. Even if you don't take A into account, it's easy enough to figure out that B is telling the truth and work from there.
Tyrannigon64
02-07-11, 01:20 PM
No, I'm saying that to the player, there is the possibility of there being two liars. They don't know that A is one of the liars, all they know is that there is a possibility of more than one of them lying. Also, please explain the "easy logic" you used to rule out BCDE and F. I want to understand how you got to that conclusion.
ImmunityBow
02-08-11, 01:22 AM
Sure, the only reason I didn't explain it before was that I typed it out and lost it all by accident.
If B is lying, then I must be lying. That would mean that both G and H must be telling the truth (since otherwise there would be 4-5 liars). But that's impossible, because if both B and I are lying, then G must be lying. So B is cleared.
That clears E.
Which clears C, since both B and E are clear.
Which clears D, since if he is lying, F is lying, which would mean that both G and I are lying, which makes many liars.
Which clears F.
Only two leaps of logic there, and they're pretty quick to resolve.
I still don't quite get where you're going with A. Is A Layla because A is one of the liars, or is A Layla simply because?
Tyrannigon64
02-08-11, 02:25 AM
Layla is disguised as A, and always lies until revealed to be a liar. Do you have any other questions/comments?Also, are my other gyms good enough to be in the game, or do they need tweaking? Or should they be ditched entirely?

No, I like all the gym designs, though many of them I'd like to actually get to playtest before handing a final verdict, since it's really hard to tell with some of them without actually mucking about in game. I wouldn't be paying as much attention to the liar one if I didn't like it, myself.
But it's still not clear what you're supposed to do. Find the liar? Why?
The main goal should be to find Layla, so the instructions should say how to find Layla:
Layla is in the room, and is a liar. Find her.
Maybe not those words exactly, but it should be along those lines.
Tyrannigon64
02-08-11, 03:29 AM
I thought of an alternative: there can be a back room, and the door to it is locked. A says "When you find the liar, you will be able to go to the back room, where Layla is waiting." This is not true, as A is Layla, but isn't confusing as it is in no way true. Also, how should one accuse a person of being a liar, without it being obvious that you are able to accuse A? I would suggest the use of a key on the keyboard that isn't normally used. I also came up with another idea. At the end of every person's statement, they say "Keep in mind that if you accuse me as a liar, you will have to battle me." which is only true if a truth-teller says it, and is only a lie if a liar says it. Probably not a very good idea, but no harm in mentioning it, right?

I think it shouldn't be too hard to program a "Accuse as liar" button as being "S" or something. Otherwise, seems fine.

No, I'm just saying that if anyone has RPG Maker XP they could just make a playtest of only the gyms, so we could potentially test them before the demo. I'm potentially getting it next weekend (the 19th), so if no one else does, I could put something together.
Also, Tyrranigon; sure the idea isn't completely origional, but I personally like it. Also, tell your friend that if he/she wants to have a say in Topaz's gyms, then he/she should join Topaz him/herself. :p

How far did you get? Did you get to the ice island (or whatever it's called) with the Anoukis? This is the puzzle: The chief of the Anoukis says that one of the other six Anoukis is lying (and is not lying himself). He wants you to find out who it is. I found the clues online.
FoFo says Gumo is honest.
Kumu says Mazo or Aroo is lying.
Dobo says Mazo is honest.

Aroo says Kumu is lying.
Mazo says that he and Dobo are honest.

Yeah, I've finished phantom hourglass multiple times, so i know that puzzle pretty well. In all honesty though, LOZ is not the first to use the concept, that type of puzzle has been around for decades. It's never been in a pokemon game though, so I think we should use it.

I've beaten the whole game once. Probably just didn't remember that part well. As i said, I didn't like the game all that much, so i guess it didn't stick as well in my memory. Other games, like OOT and MM, were fun, and I remember them quite well. I love them so....
I own PH and i remember that part it was 6 people which was interesting.. As to the liar test, yes it's been done plenty of times before, i remember having to do tons of it in school for a while, nearly drove me insane cause i couldnt get it right for years.... (i finally did when i played PH though)
From what i've played of the Pokemon series no i dont think that they've ever done this anywhere in there so it would be great to have this in the game especially when dealing with the gym leader.
And as for that part with Layla being the annoying guy he could say that there is one liar in here find him. There would still be two liars but now it's very clear which ones are lying (a little) as the person at the entrance would be telling a lie and one of the other trainers would be telling a lie.
Unfortunately there's a slight problem with this particular puzzle. People who don't want to go through the trouble of finding the leader will by-pass identifying the 2 liars and just battle everyone in there until they've found the gym leader.
I actually remember when i went through the 5th gym in Diamond that i solved the problems but i forgot to go back and battle the trainers so i was in some major trouble as my pokes weren't leveled up from it, it bit me in the butt when i fought the E4 but i managed to get through alive.
I just think that something else should be set up in the gym so that you would have to (more or less) fight everyone even if you did figure out the solution.
I believe Wake's gym from PDP, and a few from RSE could also be solved without ever going through trainers.
(I'm not saying remove all alternative paths but make it so that one isn't clearly identifiable.)
Thought just occurred to me: in RSE there's a gym where it's dark inside and you would have to go through it blind till you found the leader, But if you've been through it several times you could just go visit him if without ever fighting the trainers. So how exactly would we try to make it harder for people to find the easy-to-follow alt. path once discovered?
Tyrannigon64
02-11-11, 01:47 AM
I think the trainer should have a choice as to whether or not he or she wants to battle trainers.
Like I mentioned above (in a spoiler), I think that the annoying guy should say "If you find the liar, you will be able to challenge Layla, who is waiting in the back room." Maybe once you find out that the annoying guy is Layla, she'll go into the back room. After you figure out the puzzle, (but before you actually challenge Layla) you can talk to the trainers. They will say "You already found Layla, so it doesn't matter whether or not I was lying. Or did you want to battle me? (show options "Yes" and "No")" I think that would work. It's better than Fuchsia gym in HG/SS (the gym where everyone is dressed as the leader and there were invisible walls). I remember once I was trying to fight everyone in the gym, but I accidentally challenged the real Janine thinking it was a fake Janine (I'm pretty sure that was her name).

YES. Also, I think it would be hilarious if, once you battle Layla, the back room opens up and you find that they trapped the real annoying guy back there. Then he quickly goes over types and stuff.

i didnt mean to actually prevent the players from actually being forced into fighting them i just meant that something could be set up to allow an alternative path that wouldn't be quickly identified. Some of the other gyms do that iirc... (unfortunately i forget which ones did that)

I think there are too many restrictions to do with the potions. You could easily make it work still if you let the FIREPROOF potion be applied on non-Surf Pokemon, what would the real difference be? You still used SURF on the cauldron. Just cut down on the unnecessary complicated bits.
As for ledges, have you tried making an object on the same level as the player (so it cannot be walked on) that if you press the right arrow key teleports you to the right of the ledge?

That's not the part that I wanted to know, it's how I make that only happen when he's facing one direction. Also, that's not a problem anymore, there are ledges that come with the Pokemon Essentials that don't need any events to work.
ImmunityBow
02-13-11, 04:31 AM
Okay then, but it would have worked both ways anyway, at least for testing purposes. If you were on the left, you would jump to the right. You couldn't be on the top or bottom since there's just more ledge there, and if you're coming in from the right you would just stay on the same tile since that's the one you're teleporting to.
theres a move command in there for moving the character or other event, it lets u tell the event to jump, another thing is there is a directional control where u edit the tileset, i forget what it's labeled but it lets you determine whether the player can go through it in a certain direction.
as for setting it up for the character to jump when facing a specific direction (ignoring the other thing i mentioned) there's a button in there called conditional branch that u put in the event, and it will activate if the key pressed or player facing, etc. is matching. It also comes with an option to turn on/off the else handler.
Conditional branches are called If Then statements, very easy to work with (unless of course you want to add more that one option for doing anything)

This seems cool except that it's very big for a gym. Is it possible to scale down the size a little? I don't think nine switches are necessary, six would probably be a little more manageable.
Also, for Therma's Gym, I was looking through my old sprites and came across this one:
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/795/scholar3.png
I edited it a bit (mainly hair and added collar), maybe it could work as a librarian in Therma's gym? The main gripe with it before was that it was too plain, so if someone wants to help fix that feel free. It's a full scratch by the way.

Would five switches be okay? Also, I think your sprite's legs are a bit too long, but otherwise I like it.

Edit button expired, therefore double post.
Before I made the Enechestra gym, I had an idea for an electric gym, but it was very similar to this (spinner tiles, where some of them can be changed by pressing switches, some of said switches being along the path and you press them while being pushed around by the spinner tiles). Should I bother posting it or should I come up with something else?

Why not? If you've got the room in your album, might as well give it a chance.

Five switches seems fine.

I actually think the sprite looks great the way it is. I'm sure it would be fine with slightly shortened legs also.

Refer to this topic (http://www.pokemontopaz.net/forums/showthread.php?869-Trainer-Sprites&p=16458#post16458) for my edited version of IB's sprite.
I figure its a better place to discuss this anyway.

Okay, I'll try to upload the Dynamo Gardens gym I thought of when I get the chance. BTW, I've thought of another basic idea for the Dynamo Gardens gym, not the actual layout just the idea, so I'll make that when I get the chance. I think my first priority, though, is to edit the existing Enechestra gym. Also, I can't think of anything for Saharan gym. Anyone have any ideas?

For Saharan, I'd be down for a maze. There's a pervading Egyptian theme to the city, and a labyrinth seems to fit.
MeekRhino
02-28-11, 02:10 PM
I think that a labyrinth would be good, especially with limited vision (think the pyramid in battle frontier emerald version).
Tyrannigon64
02-28-11, 02:11 PM
It's Egyptian themed? I guess it's easier to think of an Egyptian gym than it is to think of just a Ground gym. Just a maze seems kind of boring though. I'd like to have booby traps, but I can't really think of any that would work. I'll see what I can think of.
Edit: MeekRhino posted while I was posting :P Yeah, limited vision could work, but I don't remember anything from the Battle Frontier. At all. So I don't really know what your talking about. I will when I get back to playing Sapphire though, which should be during March Break.

Just be careful to not make it like Dewford, which was a maze with limited vision. I think that there ought to be switches which open walls or something, which would make it more complicated. There could be statues or drawings along the wall, with some of them really being trainers in costume.
And it would be awesome if we could have an indoor sandstorm combined with slight darkness, which would reduce visibility without copying Dewford.

Riddles. It should have riddles. Sphinxes tell riddles, right? And yeah, the things you mentioned would be cool too.

But we've already done the mental game in Aquapolis. Especially since they're right after each other, I think we should stay away from riddles.

I always thought there was going to be a mirror puzzle, ala Mario and Luigi 1 and LoZ:Ocarina of Time?
Tyrannigon64
02-28-11, 09:51 PM
I didn't get to those parts of those games. Either way, I did make a mirror puzzle for Portwind gym, and I think it makes more sense for a Light gym than it would for a Ground gym.
MeekRhino
03-01-11, 04:02 AM
Agreed, mirrors are better for light. I think that if we combine limited vision labyrinth w/ sandstorm with the strength puzzle idea it would make a decent gym
Tyrannigon64
03-01-11, 04:04 AM
But the mirror thing is sort of a strength puzzle; you use strength to move the mirrors.
MeekRhino
03-01-11, 11:14 AM
Oh. I didn't know that.

03-01-11, 02:11 PM
ISSUE: You won't have strength when you get to Portwind as of right now, since you can't use it outside of battle until you beat Crys. It IS possible to change it, if we switch Rock Smash (unlocked at 2nd Gym) and Strength (Unlocked at 8th gym). Or, you should just be able to push the mirrors yourself, without having to use strength. Is that an option?
Tyrannigon64
03-01-11, 03:40 PM
Oh yeah, that would be a problem. The only things I can think of to remedy that are, like you said, switch Rock Smash and Strength, or redesign the gym with rotatable mirrors.
NyteFyre
03-01-11, 07:49 PM
Well, Mario and Luigi had switch activations, while LoZ had simply pushing and pulling them. Pushing them yourself sounds fine.
MeekRhino
03-01-11, 09:07 PM
Yes, I think that just pushing them would be ok. There is certainly precedent, i.e. the Veilstone gym punching bags (I believe that's the right city).

redesign the gym with rotatable mirrors.

I'll try to upload my idea for Dynamo gym ASAP, but that might be tomorrow. Also, I had another idea for it. I haven't completed it on a map or anything, but I think it will be better than the first one.
Also, just confirming; the idea for Saharan gym is a limited vision strength puzzle, right? If so, how would the limited vision work?

Like I said before, if we can have an indoor sandstorm and make it slightly darker, it would make it difficult to see.

RPGMaker allows you to overlay the screen with effects. A limited vision texture would probably be not much of a problem at all, especially if the gym is a pyramid like originally concepted. If you want to make rotating mirrors a little more difficult you can always place them in different rooms and on cross paths.

White space: Empty space. Player can stand here.
Grey space: Wall. Player can not stand here.
Yellow space: Entrance/exit.
Arrows: Spinner tiles. Y'know, the ones that force you to go in one direction until you hit a wall or something.
Purple space: If you're spinning and touch one of these, you stop spinning.
Green space: There are white spaces underneath this, so the player can stand on or under it.
A: Spinner that points north, but will cycle through the directions north, east, and west when a green lever is pulled.
B: Spinner that points north, but will cycle through the directions north and west when a red lever is pulled.
C: Spinner that points west, but will cycle through the directions west and north when a white switch is pushed.
D: Spinner that points south, but will cycle through the directions south and north when a yellow lever is pulled.
E: Spinner that points west, but will cycle through the directions west and east when a black lever is pulled.

I: Spinner that points east, but will cycle through the directions east and west when a purple lever is pulled.
J: Stairs going south to north.
K: Stairs going west to east.
L: Green lever. Changes direction of A when player presses the action button while facing it.
M: Red lever. Changes direction of B.
N: Blue switch. Changes direction of F and G when stepped on. Does not stop the effects of the spinners.
O: White switch. Changes direction of C when stepped on. Does not stop the effects of the spinners.
P: Blue lever. Changes direction of F and G when player presses the action button while facing it.
Q: Orange lever. Changes direction of H when player presses the action button while facing it.
R: Purple lever. Changes direction of I when player presses the action button while facing it.
S: Yellow switch. Changes direction of D when stepped on. Does not stop the effects of the spinners.
T: Black lever. Changes direction of E when player presses the action button while facing it.

Never mind then.
I think people are going to be overwhelmed by how many switches and levers there are in so many gyms. I think a more interesting application is when you travel over a tile it automatically "switches" so you just have to figure out the order. In that case it'd probably be wise to add a one-way escape route accessible from any part of the gym.

White space: Normal floor. Player can stand here.
Grey space: Wall. Player can not stand here.
Red arrows: Spinner tiles. Makes the player spin in the direction of the arrows if the player steps on it until (s)he hits a wall or stopper.
Purple space: Stopper. Makes the player stop spinning.
A: Red spinner. Points north originally, but toggles between north and east when red switch is pressed.
B: Yellow spinner. Points east originally, but toggles between east, west, and north when yellow switch is pressed.
C: Green spinner. Points south originally, but toggles between south and north when green switch is pressed.
D: Blue spinner. Points east originally, but toggles between east and north when blue switch is pressed.
E: Red switch.
F: Blue switch.
G: Green switch.
H: Yellow switch.
I: Gym trainer. Faces south.
J: Gym trainer. Faces west.
K: Gym trainer. Faces north.
L: Gerad.
Where did the idea for Gerad's name come from, anyways?
Also, I have Saharan Gym ready, but uploading isn't working. I've tried Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox, and it still isn't working. Yeah, but there might be something I overlooked. I'll have to remake it in RPGMaker to make sure there isn't any other way to get trapped.
