Well for starters, the logic behind 3 beating a value of 3 (it happens) is nonsense anyway, but...
If there is, say, a three on the board and you place a card with a value of three, you'll capture that card.
But if you play a card, value of 4, that the other card resists (-1), it wont capture it.

In short:
freshly placed 3>3
3> freshly placed 4-1 (minus one coming from a type resistance)

Either it should be playing 3 on a 3 results in no capture or playing a 4-1 on a three results in a capture.

I believe that speed and HP have an affect on which card wins, too.

Also, are you sure that no type advantages are at play for the first one? A specific example would be helpful, if you could provide one.

I was playing triple triad to see if I could replicate your problem. I didn't have that problem, but I did notice that my (newly aquired) Slowbro card was wearing a Slowking costume.
