View Full Version : Annoying Things in Life

A thread to talk about things that get you frustrated, annoyed, etc.
I guess I'll start:
Being behind someone that's moving really slowly. I'm talking about in school, walking down the halls, but I assume it goes for driving too (I'm too young to drive).
When people mispronounce words, mainly "nuclear" as "nucyelar" and "frustrated" as "fustrated".
When you're about to say something to someone and you forget what you were going to say.
That's all I got right now. I might think of something later.

You bet your ass it goes for driving. I don't drive that fast, but there's a lot of old people near where I live, and they go about 7mph everywhere.

One thing that really gets me is when people say "Calm down."
Somehow in those two words I am awash with the ideas that the person is a condescending prick attempting to make nothing of my opinion and saying that any kind of emotion I'm feeling is wrong. It leaves no room for discussion or conversation and tends to give the speaker the false feeling that he's being mature for stopping the argument.
I don't hate many things, but that would be one of the strongest contenders.

I don't have much of a list, but here it is:
*Being around people smoking
*Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, and other inflammatory conservative TV hosts
I particularly despise the latter; it's one thing to have a certain political view. It's another to attack those who have opposing views and make yourself look like some saintly, angelic being because of them. Obviously, some are nicer than others, but Coulter and O'Reilly take the cake for the worst, I think (hence I don't watch them).
being backstabbed and used by people. Simple. Or cheated on.

In contrast, I find it annoying when people tailgate because they think you're going too slow, but in reality, you're going over the speed limit already. Especially for me, since I'm used to driving in rush hour traffic, where 10kmph over the speed limit is still too slow for most roads.
Some other things:
-people who think that they are the smartest thing in the room
-lack of respect for authority
-TAs (and profs and teachers) that don't seem to care about the course they're supposed to be teaching.
But I could go on infinitely.

I'm probably the only American who finds feet/inches/pints etc. annoying. GO METRIC, YOU STUBBORN HUMANS!!!
I also dislike people who believe that it is okay to write poorly online, use text language, or actually say "lol" in everyday speech.

I am with you. Why did we make such a complicated version of everything? 5280 feet per mile is not something that fits in the mind easily when compared to metric conversions.

Hey, I'm American, and I agree with above, why must we be so stupid?
ImmunityBow
01-10-11, 01:36 AM
A foot is more manageable to keep in mind than a metre, though.
Considering that when you hear that someone is 1m 30, 1m 40 or 1m 50, it doesn't quite resonate as well as, say, 4'6", 5' or 5'6". Imperial is a little more human-scale than metric.
NyteFyre
01-10-11, 01:43 AM
Well, it's ok when doing human height, but weight, and long length, and liquid measurements are annoying to calculate in your head. I hated trying to remember liquid measurement. Liters are so much easier, though it's exploited in Europe. Try comparing $2.50 a gallon to 3 Euro a liter. It's fucked up.
Cyndadile
01-10-11, 01:58 AM
It is true that a foot has a very convinient reference length. A human foot.
But I'm glad that in Science classes at least, where we take (metric) TONS of measurements, we use the system that makes more sense.
We Americans need to either swich to metric or make some revisions to our measurements and start counting in base 12. But we're too stubborn to do either. I believe that the government has tried multiple times. (The metric part, not the base 12 part).
Its nice to know I'm not the only American who feels this way.

SilentSentinel

America has attempted to convert to metric before, my dad says they tried once when he was in grade school. I think it resulted in a lot of major miscalculations with the economy though, like there was a massive NASA project that got ruined because half the units were in metric and half weren't or something.

Bell Canada and their retardedly low bandwidth caps. I can't even download NWN2 from Steam here because it's 1GB over my limit!
zeroality
01-28-11, 12:09 AM
Ugh bandwidth caps? That is subpar.
Can't you get DSL? They tend not to cap that because it works differently from cable. With cable, the neighborhood on the same router (or whatever) has a fixed speed limit. If someone is using a lot of speed, it slows down the other users. That isn't the case for DSL so caps usually aren't an issue.
They do it for DSL as well -- even then I can't get it because I'm in the middle of nowhere.

Here's another thing that irks me... the fact that (apparently) Windows 7 64 bit systems come with IE8 32bit and IE8 64bit installed. Why???
IE already sucks and the only way I'd want more than one version is to have IE8/7/6 for website testing. .__________.
Now I don't know if I'm supposed to be using 32bit or 64bit IE8.
That and the fact that Windows Photo Viewer can't play .gif files seem to be the only two things that Microsoft really got wrong as far as Windows 7 is concerned. It's great otherwise.

You have a valid point. Although if we want to trace the problem to its actual source I would say we can blame Mubarak in Egypt. He caused 'his people' to rise up, which sparked similar ideas in several other countries, i. e. Libya
Reliability
02-25-11, 02:53 PM
I wouldn't say it sparked similar ideas. Even if Egypt hadn't done anything, there was still discontent in Libya. It might be more correct to say that the events in Egypt created an environment in which the Libyans felt comfortable in rising up.
But the root cause is still Gaddafi.
MeekRhino
02-25-11, 04:00 PM
I think that the situation in Egypt is what caused the Libians to riot. Had there been no example, the discontent would have continued for a long time without the fighting breaking out (although it probably would have eventually)

Fixed. People are relying on driving too much. Really, its out own fault. I prefer not to drive in snow, which is why I avoid driving.
@Cyn: the recent spike in gas prices was caused by Libya's 2% of oil output being stopped (irrational fear ftw). Though gas prices are already high, the fact that their that much higher is Lybia's fault. BUT, as an oversight on my part, we should probably be blaming capitalism, for making irrational fears into enormous price shifts.

Snow and ice both make manoeuvring difficult. If snow is falling, it reduces visibility.

There's some girl on my Facebook who brags about buying a new car every year or so.
I don't want to seem like a jerk so I haven't said anything but I want to ask her how she feels about the world she is creating for her son to grow up in. All the pollution created from the fuel consumption; the environmental refuse from the tires, parts, metal, etc; and the waste of money on the cars, maintenance, gas, taxes for the roads.
I'd probably go on such a rant I'd end up making her cry or something and I'd feel bad.
Cyndadile
02-26-11, 07:59 PM
Yes, but wouldn't you be just as much of a jerk to the planet if you didn't say anything? Kidding. I'd just hate to see the day when Earth runs dry and we move on and suck the life out of Europa (Planet Jupiter's moon).
Which reminds me, when doing current events in 9th grade, my Science teacher kept on taking off points because I said "Planet Earth" instead of just "Earth". That really irritated me. First of all, you'd think that she'd have more constructive things to do than search my paper for tiny things to take off points for. Besides, isn't current events more of a social studies thing? Also, I find it necessary to give respect to the planets. I told her that, and she laughed. Then, I started using only her last name (without Mrs.). That really irritated her. She didn't take off points for that again.

Wow. That sounds like a stupid teacher right there. Speaking of stupid teachers, my music teacher told us that we had to play instruments for a Christmas play for a project. The stupid part is that she didn't give us the sheet music for the FIVE SONGS that we had to play until TWO WEEKS before the play. For those of you who've never played an instrument before, that is not long enough to learn five songs (maybe long enough for one or two). We were terrible, but she still marked us high, fortunately.

It depends on the songs. I've done something similar.
Of course, I've also had to sight read on the night of a concert because they needed an extra a. sax on a certain song. That was tons of fun.

Once you really get going on an instrument it shouldn't take more than an hour's worth of solid practice to learn a simple piece, maybe five or six for an intermediate one. (So if you practice for half an hour a day, it might take you a week and a half, which seems semi reasonable). One trick is to practice in chunks rather than practicing the whole thing from start to finish every time, which wastes a bunch of time.
As for gas prices, fun fact: Did you know that if every American drove a Toyota Prius, America wouldn't need to buy any foreign oil at all? Though that doesn't account for all the gas/materials needed to make them and trash all the existing cars...

What is a mask?
My name is Hector Gold.
My mother always say, "What is a mask?" And I know what this mask is: it is what you wear to hide you. But the people who wear masks don't have a passion. Passion is the heart to believe, to be the best in all of Pokemon. Hector Gold is the best in all of Pokemon.
Now this gives birth to a second question: what is a truth? Truth is the defeat of lying. I hate liars and I will defeat them everywhere. This is because I am a aristocrat. My sangue is royale and pure, which is the reverse of the blood worn by dogs who lie and cheat. Many dogs live here and I will teach them respect.
My mother always say, "To be the truth you need to be true." I am Hector Gold and I am true.

My name is Hector Gold.
I would like an intelligence. Many people are stupid because they accept being medium in a world everlasting of potential. They wallow in lying and indolence, thus giving birth to poison why other people become bad Pokemon models. But I am not a bad Pokemon model because I am a aristocrat. I read forever and know how to be the truth--which makes me better than the dogs who lie and cheat. In fact, it is incontrovertible that an dog is here now, because dogs are hate and they hate that which is not. I am not hate because I am honesty and truth. That means I am the greatest because I have an respect by other peoples.
However, other such peoples possess an proclivity to mock those where blood is royal and pure. When these babies experience birth, they have no hope because they are evil. Evil is manifest where parents are, and parents is not immune to the poison created by many Pokemon battlers. There is one Pokemon battler that I despise much; however, I am a respect because I am a good person. Therefore, I willingly say that the one person is many because my mother always say, "one man can not destroy when one man is not the first man."
I will not destroy, I will not hate, but I will be the first man to be the man of the peoples.
Hector Gold, the peoples.

What's that quote from Einstein... "There are two things infinite in this world; stupidity and the universe - and I'm not completely sure about the second one." Or something like that... I'm too lazy to ask the Google.
