star coins are the coins mario and luigi pick up in their various games you can find them in pretty much any Mario Party game as well as a few others... they started off as just coins that people would collect in the original Super Mario Bros. games. They would add an extra life each time you gained 100 of them...
btw 99 lives is the max u could get in any mario game where you have to worry bout dieing in...
