I think those were meant to just be like evolution stones, so there wouldn't really be a reason for them to have an effect.

Currently all the Umbra Crest does is cause certain Pokémon holding it to evolve.
While there are some items like this, most have a in-battle effect.
Should the Umbra Crest have one? What could it be?
EDIT: Rivalry Orb too, although I was just going to give that one a weaker version of the Rivalry ability.

But... they're hold items?
Okay, more like the Dubious Disk or something. They were never given effects because they weren't meant to have any. I guess you could add something, but we'd need to add multiple copies since the items are consumed upon evolution. Iirc there was only meant to be one Rivalry Orb in the game, but maybe there could be a second for postgame.
Wait they're consumed upon evolution? What is this madness?
Vanilla, apparently.
We'll need two Rivalry Orbs anyways, otherwise trainers can't catch 'em all.
That is often the case in Pokemon games. You have to choose between Helix Fossil/Dome Fossil etc. There are story reasons why there would only be one Rivalry Orb, if I remember correctly.
Yeah, to sale more games by releasing two slightly different copies. Now if we had working trade, that'd be different, but I don't think we do.
Look at Emerald, they did the fossils best.
How does one get the Rivalry Orb? It starts in two pieces right?
Do Zangoose and Seviper appear before or after that? If after we could have their rare item be a orb shard. Hell we could if before, but then we might have to rework the fetch quests I believe?
Why not just implement trading and trade for the evo you don't have?
Sure, I'll just cure cancer too :P
Unless you mean in game trading, which is totally possible. But then we're relegating Zantilidae and Pythang to psuedo-legendary status, rarer than even the starters (since you can't breed a Zantilidae or Pythang).
As far as I'm aware none exist.
There are ways to emulate Wonder Trade, but that's an illusion over regular NPC trading afaik.
Edit: There's some experimental GTS scripts, but they require a server and knowledge of PHP and MySQL.

It's not impossible, but it's hard enough getting the game complete as is. On top of that, it would almost certainly require us to run a server dedicated to matching these trades/battles up, unless it's purely peer to peer, which is tricky in its own right, and not neccessarily the most user friendly. There may be scripts out there for it, but I haven't seen any publically available ones that are used enough that it seems safe to use then without combing through the whole to make sure we wouldn't be sedning out malware.
Well as far as I know, it's not. Uranium and Insurgence both allow for trading to actually send the data over the Internet, so the new Pokemon you get on your file would have same moves, stats, OT, ect.
Believe me, I don't want to derail the Umbra Crest topic, but trading is doable, and would be a viable way of getting the 'mon you don't have. I will make a topic about it, but I strongly am against the notion of a fangame with no trading with other players, especially when I have such a connection to it. =x
Speaking of the Umbra Crest, I'm thinking a second one would be fine in postgame, like SS said.
Copied trading conversation to its own thread.
