    Sandshrew: To avoid predators, SANDSHREW curls itself up to look like a small boulder. When intimidated, it burrows deep into the ground to escape its attacker.

    Sandslash: When SANDSLASH moves at fast speeds, it often loses some of its scales. While the scales are too brittle to be put to any practical use by humans, they were used as decorations in ancient times.

    Spoink: SPOINK treasures the pearl that it carries on its head. Upon losing its pearl, it becomes agitated and will not stop bouncing until the pearl is placed back atop its head.

    Grumpig: GRUMPIG spends much of its time practicing an intricate dance. If it performs the dance perfectly, it can take over the minds of weaker POKEMON.

    Pineco: PINECO live in very tight knit colonies. If a predator approaches, the closest PINECO will SELFDESTRUCT, and the rest of the colony will follow suit.

    Forretress: Many scientists have attempted to solve the mystery of the contents of FORRETRESS' shell. Since it bears much in common with the sea-dwelling CLOYSTER, it was once believed they were a related species.

    Mankey: A tribe of MANKEY will pick a single tree to live in. The POKEMON that live in the areas around the tree are forced to move somewhere else due to fear of being attacked.

    Primeape: PRIMEAPE is capable of sending extra blood to its muscles in times of need. However, less oxygen is supplied to its brain, causing an inability to make rational decisions.

    Mareep: As MAREEP's coat brushes against other objects, static electricity builds up and is stored in its hooves. Upon sensing danger, it grounds itself and electrifies its fleece, puffing up to appear larger.

    Flaafy: FLAAFY's wool crackles with a beautiful electrical current. However, making its wool into clothing was banned after several incidents where the wearer would inexplicably baa and prance about.

    Ampharos: The brilliant rays of light generated by AMPHAROS' tail are harnessed for use as navigational beacons. It is standard maritime procedure to bring it on excursions in case of emergency.

    Tauros: TAUROS will retaliate against any attacker without concern for safety. Its sheer momentum allows it to smash through walls and boulders with reckless tenacity.

    Miltank: MILTANK makes a great companion but is often exploited for the milk it produces. When happy, it can can produce up to 5 gallons of MOOMOO MILK a day, which can be sold for a high profit.

    Drowzee: DROWZEE eats dreams in order to achieve REM in its own sleep. If it has not fed in a while, it becomes ill-tempered and can cause much damage due to its bulk.

    Hypno: HYPNO's pendulum can send onlookers into a deep state of dreaming. When young children are entranced, it causes them to start acting like POKEMON.

    Cleffa: Though CLEFFA seems contented by day, at night it looks wistfully upwards toward the stars. It is thought that its skyward attraction causes it to seek mountains as its habitat.

    Clefairy: Legend has it that CLEFAIRY landed on Earth during a meteor shower 10,000 years ago. Ancient stone tablets that depict it falling out of the sky lend credence to this theory.

    Clefable: CLEFABLE's seemingly useless wings are said to be meant for lower, lunar gravity. How it could achieve flight without an atmosphere has yet to be determined.

    Growlithe: GROWLITHE's loyalty and keen sense of smell has made it a popular guardian of children. While it can recognize many scents from a short distance, it can detect its TRAINER from very far away.

    Arcanine: The regal ARCANINE is renowned for its speed. The sight of the majestic POKEMON running has charmed the hearts of people since ancient times.

    Vulpix: Unless trained to restrain itself, VULPIX cannot regulate the amount of fire it produces. Wild VULPIX avoid producing fire at all, fearful of setting fire to everything around them.

    Ninetales: NINETALES never forgets a moment where it was wronged. Those who commit misdeeds in its sight report suffering nightmares of burning, red eyes.

    Whismur: WHISMUR emit extremely high-pitched and loud noises to frighten and disorient their enemies. It can end up frightening itself if the echos in the cave are too strong.

    Loudred: LOUDRED can hear with extreme precision for several miles around. To prevent insanity caused by all the environmental noise, it fills its head with its own deafening cries.

    Exploud: EXPLOUD has holes all over its body that resonate when it bellows. Conversations between individuals can be heard hundreds of miles away.

    Murkrow: Because of its unique stature, MURKROW was once believed to be a witch on a broomstick. Its feathers blend perfectly into the night sky, making it nearly impossible to see during a new moon.

    Skarmory: SKARMORY's feathers are harder than any man-made substance in the world. In ancient days, these feathers were used as the blade for swords and daggers.

    Duskull: Eerily and eternally calm, DUSKULL's presence can be felt through a chill in one's bones. It would seem that the quiescence of its thoughts allow it to pass through walls.

    Dusclops: DUSCLOPS moves into the homes of the recently deceased and sets the houses ablaze. The destruction of the departed spirits' material possessions helps them leave the physical world.

    Venonat: VENONAT's hair retains body heat and protects it from the falling temperatures at night. This allows it to devote energy to finding food rather than to warming itself.

    Venomoth: VENOMOTH's wings shed a film of toxic particles that are released in flight. Would-be predators are often wary of the irritating rash that the dust causes and avoid VENOMOTH's territory.

    Grimer: Because it is often seen lurking in landfills, some people claim GRIMER is actually the result of toxic mutation from trash. It has been proven that they do not appear in cleaner areas nearly as often.

    Muk: MUK's body releases poison gases that are harmful to humans and other POKEMON. If it comes near polluted waters, it grows bigger by absorbing the water and turning it into sludge for its body.

    Koffing: KOFFING absorbs toxic gases from the air to keep itself inflated. Since it releases these gases in the same form, KOFFING's effect on the environment is heavily debated.

    Weezing: WEEZING is a fusion of the waste material from two KOFFING. Wounds caused from being struck by its sludge quickly fester and become infected, requiring urgent medical attention.

    Zangoose: ZANGOOSE's eternal rival is SEVIPER. According to legend, the red scar on its chest is passed down from the first clash between the two POKEMON.

    Seviper: SEVIPER's deadly venom has a unique chemical make-up. A pharmacy in CIANWOOD CITY has developed a compound out of the poison that cures a few rare conditions.

    Meowth: MEOWTH is often kept as a financial good luck charm. It is mistakenly thought that its love for money makes it a good accountant, and many a business has failed as a result.

    Persian: PERSIAN is considered a more suitable mate the cleaner and brighter its fur is. It has adapted methods to stay spotless regardless of the task it performs.

    Lotad: The lily on LOTAD's head has enzymes that draw trace nutrients from rain, thereby giving it more energy. It prefers to live in wetlands and areas that have high amounts of rainfall.

    Lombre: The leaf on LOMBRE's head collects and holds water quite well. If it falls asleep during a storm, FINCHERP can be seen bathing in the water the next morning.

    Ludicolo: LUDICOLO is a carefree POKEMON whose dancing can cause rain. A semi-religious cult has formed among humans who wish to imitate its jovial attitude.

    Yanma: Instead of relaying information to the brain through nerves, YANMA's eyes float in a special semiconducting fluid. This allows them to rotate freely in their sockets, granting 360 degree vision.

    Slowpoke: Surprisingly innovated designs are left in trails drawn by idle SLOWPOKE. It is theorized that if they could remember these powerful ideas, they could form a society to rival human beings.

    Slowking: Venom from the SHELLDER's bite causes SLOWKING to become very intelligent. They are not good educators, so its wisdom often leaves no impression on its SLOWPOKE students.

    Slowbro: Some SLOWBRO do not realize they have evolved until they see a SHELLDER has bitten their tail. Even once it is noticed, the recognition process can take several days.

    Remoraid: For millenia, REMORAID has relied on MANTINE to find food. In recent times, the disappearance of MANTINE in the oceans near CALDERA and KIRANT have left REMORAID to fend for itself.

    Octillery: Located inside OCTILLERY's stomach are several chemical fusing chambers. Inside, it creates everything from rocks and seeds to fire, which it shoots from its mouth.

    Smeargle: SMEARGLE is well-known by art collectors for its amazing painting abilities. Some have been trained to do portraits of people, which are often sold for very high prices.

    Dunsparce: DUNSPARCE burrow underground using their tails when being chased or when they are in danger. The holes left behind are often used for placing signposts or planting crops.

    Absol: For centuries there have been tales of the disasters caused by ABSOL. Recent studies show that these POKEMON are simply attracted to the disaster sites, intending to warn the affected people.

    Corphish: The meaty insides of a CORPHISH's claws can be boiled down and consumed for their high protein content. For this reason, this Pokemon is mass-raised to huge sizes on aquatic farms.

    Crawdaunt: Though its bioluminescent star would be useful for luring prey, CRAWDAUNT is fast and strong enough not to need it. Its true purpose remains a mystery.

    Ditto: DITTO is made of a substance similar in consistency to moulding clay. Though it has been studied at length, no scientist has been able to figure out DITTO's chemical make-up.

    Togepi: When a TOGEPI hatches from its EGG, only its head and limbs are visible. The colorful shapes on its eggshell seem to contain a enigmatic power that prepares it for evolution.

    Togetic: Playful and caring, TOGETIC is easily affected by the emotions of those around it. You can often discern a person's true nature by observing TOGETIC's behavior around them.

    Eevee: EEVEE is widely known for its genetic cellular instability. When exposed to certain types of radiation, its cells will become highly unstable and mutate into radically altered forms.

    Vaporeon: VAPOREON is so timid that it rarely allows itself to be seen above water. Seen through a sailor's spyglass, its tail is often mistaken for that of a mermaid's.

    Jolteon: JOLTEON runs at incredibly fast speeds, making it look like a large yellow blur. When agitated, this POKeMON releases enough electricity to cause massive power outages.

    Flareon: To breath fire, FLAREON ignites its flammable saliva with its internal flame. This characteristic makes FLAREON's fire much more difficult to put out than regular one.

    Espeon: In ancient times, ESPEON was worshipped as a sacred POKEMON. This belief was reinforced by the fact that its power changes with movement of the sun.

    Umbreon: While UMBREON does not mind sunlight, it is primarily active at night. In the absence of moonlight, its rings can glow bright enough to be seen for miles in any direction.

    Misdreavus: Born silent, MISDREAVUS follows people through ominous places, drawn by their fear. As it grows older, it learns to scream in a fashion reminiscent of all the frightened voices it has heard in its life.

    Tangela: To escape predators, TANGELA's brittle vines snap easily when grabbed. They regrow quickly afterward due to their low fibre density.

    Tropius: TROPIUS' fruit directly reflects the climate of the year. It can be engorged by an abundance of rain, or deliciously sweetened by a profusion of sunlight.

    Rhyhorn: Despite a reputation for being destructive, RHYHORN are quite gentle towards smaller POKéMON. It shifts its course when it sees something defenceless in the path of its charge.

    Rhydon: Because RHYDON's thick hide makes it extremely insensitive, it has often been mistaken for stupid. It is actually quite intelligent, and learns quickly from past experiences.

    Torkoal: TORKOAL is quite difficult to capture due to the white smoke it releases when frightened. Like volcanic ash, the smoke is beneficial to desert vegetation.

    Scyther: SCYTHER lives in dense jungles, where it uses its arms to slice through foilage. Travelers often follow the paths made by SCYTHER to avoid the thick forests.

    Scizor: The eyelike markings on SCIZOR's claws give enemies the impression that it has three heads. Upon sight of the snapping heads, foes often flee in terror rather than attempt to fight.

    Lapras: LAPRAS is one of the most ancient species of POKEMON still around today. There are cave depictions of people riding it for transportation dating back over 10 000 years.

    Stantler: STANTLER typically hides in dense forests where it can blend in to the surroundings. When startled, it will use its antlers to hypnotize the percieved threat long enough to escape.

    Cacnea: CACNEA adapted to the harsh, arid deserts by storing water in a special chamber in its stomach. It also developed thorns to ward off enemy attacks.

    Cacturne: CACTURNE stand motionless in the desert waiting to steal from passersby. Despite CACTURNE's bad reputation, travellers with little or no supplies are not usually targeted.

    Trapinch: TRAPINCH lies half-buried in sand, waiting for prey to approach its jaws. Once it has successfully trapped its quarry, its jaws lock until it has fully digested.

    Vibrava: VIBRAVA's extremely large eyes give it a wide field of vision. It can see 170 degrees without turning it's head, making attacks from the side easy to avoid.

    Flygon: FLYGON possesses sensitive antennae that act as seismographs. In the event of an earthquake, it rapidly beats its wings and hovers until the danger has passed.

    Staryu: It was discovered that STARYU's regenerative abilities stem from its gemstone. Because STARYU can regrow limbs, this stone is being investigated for use in a powerful new POTION.

    Starmie: STARMIE can use its powerful RAPID SPIN attack to cut through overgrown kelp forests. Preventing oxygen depletion in the water, it is a valuable species in any ocean ecosystem.

    Corsola: CORSOLA's environmental sensitivity is so strong that rising acidity and temperatures cause its numbers to greatly diminish. Savvy tourists know that its presence indicates a truly pristine area.

    Chinchou: On the ocean floor, CHINCHOU's antennae give off light bright enough to be seen from sea level. This light is a drawback when hunting because its prey easily notice it approaching.

    Lanturn: LANTURN's antenna brightens as it gathers electrons from sea water at the bottom of the ocean. It lights the way of divers, showing them interesting landmarks it has previously seen.

    Relicanth: Recent research suggests that RELICANTH survived through several eras of now extinct POKEMON. A widely accepted theory proposes that all fish POKEMON today are its descendants.

    Jirachi: Legends speak of JIRACHI creating the lands of CALDERA and KIRANT as a result of a wish. There have been no official sightings since, so its current location is unknown.
